Children’s Creative Responses to the Rights of the Child

Artists Róisín Kane and Elizabeth Bennett  work creatively with children from Our Lady Immaculate Primary School, Darndale, Dublin 17, and St Francis Primary School, Priorswood, Dublin 17, exploring the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

Through imaginative and participatory creative activities, the children explore their rights, voices, experiences and hopes for the future, developing their own artistic responses to the Rights of the Child. The project encourages children to express themselves creatively while exploring important themes including equality, inclusion, identity, safety, participation and having their voices heard.

The children’s completed artistic pieces will be displayed as part of a celebratory Darndale Arts and Human Rights Day in the school halls from 11.00am on 15 October, 2026 providing an opportunity for parents, teachers and other classes to view and celebrate the children’s work and their creative responses to human rights.

This event is presented by Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality and

Creative Places Darndale.

Creative Places Darndale is an arts award supported by the Arts Council. First awarded to the area of Darndale, Belcamp, Moatview, Clonshaugh and Priorswood in June 2021, the Arts Council’s Creative Places programme invests in places such as towns, villages, suburbs, and island communities that have had fewer opportunities to take part in the arts. The arts in Ireland can be defined by its various art forms  i.e. Visual Art, Music, Dance, Literature, Film, Theatre, Opera, Traditional Arts, Architecture, Circus and Street Arts and Spectacle.

The purpose of Creative Places Darndale is to promote arts participation in the areas outlined above, support local creatives living in the area, and embed socially engaged arts practice into the community. Over the course of the years, Creative Places Darndale has been active building on the variety of art forms that are already present in the Dardale area; introducing the arts or different art forms where they are not present;  increasing participation in the arts by the people who live in this area and leaving a legacy of participation in the arts.

Creative Places Darndale is run by Northside Partnership and Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality and is supported by the Arts Council and Dublin City Council Arts Office.

Speaker Biographies:

Roisin Kane, Visual Artist

Roisin Kane is a Dublin-based artist whose practice is grounded in ceramics and socially engaged art. They graduated from the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) with a BA in Fine Art in 2019, specialising in ceramics. Their practice explores material, place and lived experience, with an interest in creating spaces for connection, conversation and shared reflection. Their socially engaged work has involved collaborating with people across a wide range of ages and backgrounds, from school-aged children to older people, using creative processes to encourage participation, storytelling and connection.

Elizabeth Bennett , Visual Artist

Elizabeth Bennet is an artist and designer with a love for colour, texture, and storytelling through visuals. Her work explores transformation, emotion, and the expressive potential of the human figure. Through vibrant colour, expressive forms, visual distortions, and dynamic compositions, she challenges conventional perceptions of reality, creating altered images that feel nostalgic.

Elizabeth’s practice is informed by the study of composition, form, and the relationship between colour and space. She uses these elements to construct expressive and visually engaging images, often experimenting with distortion and abstraction to explore how the human figure can be perceived and interpreted.

She studied Fine Art Painting at Limerick School of Art and Design, followed by a diploma in Graphic Design. Level 9 certificate in Marketing and Communications. Her practice brings together traditional fine art techniques with contemporary design approaches, allowing her to move between painting, digital imagery, and design.
