SUMMARY:An Immigrant’s Story by Wanjiru Kamuyu - Solo Dance Performance
DESCRIPTION:Physical Landscapes – Thrilling and Unique Dance event with Six Outstanding Dancers presented by Irish Modern Dance Theatre at the Black Box\, Galway\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhysical Landscapes is a thrilling and unique dance work by choreographer John Scott and Irish Modern Dance Theatre featuring international dancers and responding to ecology and nature. \n\n\nWanjiru Kamuyu\, dance artist\, explores the gaze placed on the ‘foreigner’ in a new society\, using satire\, contemporary dance and physical performance to interrogate migration and identity. Presented by the Regional Dance Network: Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre\, Dance Limerick\, Tipperary Dance and Dance Cork Firkin Crane. \n\n\n\nBook Your Place\n\n\n\nBook here \n\n\n\nArtists\n\n\n\nWanjiru Kamuyu\, Choreographer\, Dance Artist\, Creator \n\n\n\nWKcollective\, dancers \n\n\n\nFull Event Details\n\n\n\nAn Immigrant’s Story by Wanjiru Kamuyu is a solo dance performance presented by the Regional Dance Network: Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre\, Dance Limerick\, Tipperary Dance and Dance Cork Firkin Crane\, taking place on Thursday 15 October 2026\, from 7.30 to 9pm\, at Dance Cork Firkin Crane\, John Redmond St\, Shandon\, Cork\, T23 Y584. \n\n\n\nWanjiru Kamuyu\, dance artist\, is engaged in questioning the notions of place\, belonging and otherness. A cosmopolitan on three continents – Africa\, North America and Europe – wherever she decides to set up home\, is she considered an immigrant? \n\n\n\nHer solo dance performance interrogates the gaze upon the “foreigner” in a new space\, new society. The work\, through satire\, offers a critical eye on the notions of place and placement that are prevalent in today’s political discourse. An Immigrant’s Story is a Bessie Award winner in the category Outstanding Choreographer. \n\n\n\nThis event is presented by the Regional Dance Network: Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre\, Dance Limerick\, Tipperary Dance and Dance Cork Firkin Crane. \n\n\n\nLocated in a heritage building in Shandon\, Cork’s north city centre\, Dance Cork Firkin Crane specialises in supporting dance artists\, presenting dance performances and encouraging people in Cork to engage with dance of all kinds. \n\n\n\nWe provide an inclusive and welcoming space for dance work to be developed and viewed through a year-round programme of residencies\, workshops\, studio rentals\, community programmes\, dance performances and special events. \n\n\n\nOur programme is mission driven\, aiming to identify\, nurture\, and support local and regional artists while simultaneously introducing artists and audiences to national and international choreographers. We support an annual dance artist in residence and are developing other national dance advocacy projects in partnership with Dance Ireland\, Dance Limerick\, Galway Dance and Tipperary Dance. \n\n\n\nArtist residencies supporting the research\, development\, and production of new work are a central aspect of DCFC’s programme. In addition\, a series of professional presentations\, with a lens towards audience engagement\, take place throughout the year. Professional and community classes for adults and youth are also offered. \n\n\n\nDance Cork Firkin Crane is the home of Inclusive Dance Cork (IDC)\, a training programme for people with and without disabilities who are interested in learning inclusive dance methods. Learn more about IDC here. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biographies:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWKcollective creates immersive\, visceral experiences through the medium of contemporary dance. Global military spending now exceeds €3 trillion every year. Who benefits and where is the equivalent investment in peace? Instead of spending 1.7 billion on defence\, should the Irish government spend this money on housing\,  job creation and peace? Why can billions be found for war spending while poverty homelessness\, wealth inequality and climate breakdown continue to worsen? These are the debates we need to have in Irish society and the media.  Artist Mary Moynihan says ‘Ireland can be a leading voice for peace. Defend our neutrality\, defend the Triple lock and challenge the growing influence of military and corporate interests on public policy and governments. As our former president Michael D. Higgins said\, we need to ‘make space for peace.’   \n\n\n\nThis is followed by a guest artist interview with Aoife McAtamney\, a multidisciplinary artist working with contemporary dance\, choreography\, filmmaking\, music and education. Aoife is  Artistic Director of Daughter Of A Drum\, and a part of Choreography Connects\, a CoisCéim artist-led residency project. Responding to ecology and nature\, ‘Physical Universe’ explores the themes of ‘the other’ and ‘the witness’ in a way that is both moving and life-affirming. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDancers include Galway’s Magdalena Hylak\, French virtuoso Boris Charrion\, Afro-Brazilian Alessandra Azeviche\, and Ireland’s Adam O’Reilly. Lighting is by award-winning French artist Eric Würtz\, who creates lighting for the sensational ‘La Horde’ collective. Choreography is by John Scott\, Irish Modern Dance Theatre. \n\n\n\nIrish Modern Dance Theatre – Pioneering Transformative Dance \n\n\n\nFounded in 1991 by dancer and choreographer John Scott\, Irish Modern Dance Theatre is one of the most original and responsive dance companies working in Ireland today. A Dublin-based ensemble\, Scott and international guest choreographers create distinctive dance works with diverse casts\, mixing virtuosic Irish and international dancers with African and Middle Eastern refugees and torture survivors. Key works include Lear\, Inventions\, Actions and Fall and Recover – all recognised for their intelligence\, honesty and humanity. The work of Irish Modern Dance Theatre crosses disciplines\, subverts expectations of dance and dancers and finds new ways to explore contemporary issues. Irish Modern Dance Theatre is Strategically funded by the Arts Council. \n\n\n\nBlack Box Theatre and Town Hall Theatre\, Galway \n\n\n\nTown Hall Theatre Galway\, owned and managed by Galway City Council incorporating the state of the art 400-seater Main Auditorium and the 52-seater Studio Space at Courthouse Square\, and the nearby\, multi-purpose Black Box performance space (up to 550 seated\, 800 standing) on Dyke Road presents an extensive and eclectic mix of theatre\, concerts\, musicals\, dance\, film\, comedy and family shows year-round. The venue is open 362 days a year and 15 hours a day on average. The venue attracts audiences in excess of 100\,000 annually (close to 2 million since we officially re-opened on 1st February 1996) making it the most successful theatre of its size in Ireland. \n\n\n\nEach year\, the venue is the epicentre of activity for virtually all of Galway’s key festivals and cultural events including Galway International Arts Festival\, Galway Film Fleadh\, Cuirt Festival of Literature\, Baboro Children’s Festival and Galway Comedy Festival to name but a few. Druid have premiered many of their acclaimed and award-winning productions at the venue before embarking on national and international tours including successful Broadway and West End runs\, and an increasing number of Galway International Arts Festival’s own productions tour the world following premieres at Town Hall Theatre and Black Box. Acclaimed for consistently delivering the best of national and international talent year-round to Galway audiences\, the venue’s programme proudly features the work of many performers\, companies\, musical societies and arts organisations (both professional and amateur) from across the city and county. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biographies:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMagdalena Hylak is a dance artist based in the West of Ireland.Born in Poland\, she studied cultural studies\, including theatre and dance\, at University of Wroclaw. She began her professional career in 2011 by working with Michael Keegan Dolan (IE)\, Liz Roche (IE) and Lea Anderson (UK) as part of Step Up Dance Project. She then worked with Ríonach Ní Néill (IE)\, Catherine Young Dance (IE)\, Emma Martin (IE) and Akiko Kitamura (JP) before starting touring nationally and internationally with John Scott-IMDT (IE) and Nacera Belaza (FR)\, with over 150 performances in 52 venues across 12 countries. \n\n\n\nEarly 2021\, she started developing her own body of work through “Dances for Nobody”\, where she questions the notion of performance. Then with “A dance”\, an ongoing artistic research through raw movement and sound that translates into public performances in unconventional spaces. She is currently working on a multidisciplinary event conceived as a physical journey through a space and the time frame of her personal dance evolution. At the core of her research is the movement and sound outside of the question of style/genre or technique\, as well as the exploration of the relationships and tensions between public-personal\, inside-outside\, visible-invisible. \n\n\n\nHer dance work can be described as raw\, repetitive\, highly physical and emanating from within. She is working with the belief that dance is rooted in human existence and that there is no confusion in the public perception of a choreographic work. Therefore\, she is interested in community works where she tries to go back to the beginning and work around an absolute idea of movement/dance. \n\n\n\nMagdalena Hylak was the Galway Dance Artist in Residence for 2023-2024.She is the recipient of funding from the Arts Council of Ireland (Agility Award 2021\, Commission Award-GDP 2021\, Dance Bursary Award 2022) and the Galway County Council (Artist Support Scheme 2022). \n\n\n\nShe has been commissioned by Galway Dance Days (2012)\, Galway Dance Project (2016\, 2020\, 2021)\, Clifden Arts Festival (2022 & 2023) and Tipperary Dance Festival (2023). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBoris Charrion is a French movement and performance artist born in 2002. After studying contemporary dance in the regional conservatory of Lyon\, he entered the National Superior Conservatory of Music and Dance of Lyon where he had the opportunity to broaden his artistic horizons\, notably through various collaborations with musicians\, graphists\, composers and space designers. During his studies there\, he has worked with different choreographers such as DD Dorvillier\, Collectif A/R\, Ashley Chen. Performing Study for the Valeska Gert pavilion by Eszter Salamon for the 16th Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art has been a major part of his artistic development. Carrying a political and provocative performance for four months in a public space was a revelation to him of how performative work could be captivating and concretely rooted in current social issues. His different internships with the Ballet of the Grand Theatre of Geneva\, Carte Blanche and the choreographer Katerina Andreou have made him more aware of the reality of the dance world and of how he wants to situate himself in it. After the creation of Spatium ex-materia in 2022\, he wants to cultivate this thirst to create with his collective La niche. He is currently a member of SUB.LAB.PRO The Ensemble Program in Budapest. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlessandra Azeviche is a leading Afro-Brazilian dancer with performances at major Irish festivals with her group Criola Dance and the first woman to teach Capoeira in Ireland.Since moving to Ireland in 2015\, Alessandra  has worked with contemporary choreographers Catherine Young\, John Scott and more as well as Dublin City Council\, Axis Ballymun\, Carlow Arts\, Dublin Fringe Festivals and the Brazilian Embassy.
