After finishing school\, Deirdre won a scholarship to attend night classes and study at Erwin Piscator’s New York Dramatic Workshop. While performing there she was spotted by Lee Strasberg who invited her to join the famous Actor’s Studio where she discovered the Stanislavski system\, which was to become her lifelong passion. The Stanislavski system is  one of the main systems of actor training in the Western world and was developed by the Russian Theatre practitioner\, actor and director Constantin Stanislavski (1863-1938)\, who co-founded the Moscow Art Theatre. \n\n\n\nDeirdre became a lifelong member of the Actor’s Studio where she trained alongside actors such as Marilyn Monroe and Marlin Brando. Deirdre was destined for a brilliant acting career but\, as she said herself\, she had a vision to come to Ireland\, to train Irish actors and directors. \n\n\n\nShe arrived in Ireland in  1963 aged 23 and set up the Stanislavski Acting Studio to train actors and directors in the Stanislavski System. This led to the founding of the Focus Theatre four years later with artists including Sabina Coyne Higgins\, Tom Hickey\, Joan Bergin\, Mary-Elizabeth Burke Kennedy and Declan Burke Kennedy\, amongst others. \n\n\n\nOver the next 45 years\, from 1967 to its closure in 2012\, the Focus Theatre and Stanislavski Studio produced over 300 plays by internationally-renowned playwrights such as Henrik Ibsen\, Lillian Hellman\, Doris Lessing\, Tennessee Williams\, Arthur Miller\, Marguerite Duras\, Athol Fugard and Samuel Beckett\, as well as training many well-known Irish actors\, directors and writers.  Artists who trained there included Tom Hickey\, Tim McDonnell\, Olwen Fouéré\, Sabina Coyne Higgins\, Margaret Toomey\, Mary Moynihan\, Joan Bergin\, Mary Elizabeth Burke-Kennedy\, Gabriel Byrne\, Maeve Leonard\, Michelle Manahan and Ann Russell. President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins once said that Deirdre O’Connell was “the single greatest influence in Irish Theatre since the 60s”.[1] \n\n\n\nDeirdre O’Connell worked as Artistic Director\, manager and fundraiser of the Focus Theatre and Stanislavski Studio from 1967 until her death in 2001 as well as acting in most of the major productions presented. The Evening Press saw Focus as “one of the most exciting theatrical ventures we have had in Dublin’’ and The Irish Times said “Dublin Focus Theatre is performing a great service to the city and country by its integrity\, dedication and the excellence of its actors’’.[2] \n\n\n\nDeirdre O’Connell died suddenly at her home in Dartmouth Square in Dublin on June 10\, 2001 “four years after Focus Theatre celebrated ‘Thirty Years of Magic’ ’’.[3] Deirdre’s funeral service was held in Whitehall Church on the northside of Dublin where\, 36 years earlier\, Deirdre had married Luke Kelly of the Dubliners. Following a service attended by several hundred people Deirdre was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery.  Deirdre was an extraordinary human being and artist and she was mourned and missed by many friends and associates both personally and professionally. \n\n\n\nThe author Mary Moynihan and actor Margaret Toomey trained and worked at Focus Theatre with Deirdre O’Connell\, their friend and mentor.  With Deirdre’s blessing\, Mary\, Margaret\, and other artists\,  set up the international arts organisation Smashing Times in 1991 to bring theatre out of the traditional theatre space and into the wider community and beyond\, a rare and radical step at that time. Deidre supported many artists to develop their careers both inside and outside of Focus Theatre. \n\n\n\nIn 1986 Deirdre O’Connell received the Harvey’s Theatre Award for Outstanding Contribution to Irish Theatre.  A major success for  Focus Theatre was Diary of a Madman translated by Ronald Wilks and adapted by Tim McDonnell from the work of Nikolai Gogol\, with Tim performing the sole role of Poprischin\, and Deirdre O’Connell directing.  Tim was one of the original founding members of Focus Theatre acting in early productions including the first Focus show Play with a Tiger. \n\n\n\nIn 2004 Deirdre’s sister and life-long friend\, Geraldine O’Connell Cusack published her book Children of the Far-Flung\, a “true account of a remarkable Irish-American family\, four generations of emigration and return\, from Ireland to New York and back again. It is also the story of the author’s sister\, Deirdre O’Connell\, founder and artistic director of the critically-acclaimed Focus Theatre in Dublin\, her marriage to popular singer Luke Kelly\, her successes and failures\, and her remarkable and long-lasting impact on theatre in Ireland’’.[4] \n\n\n\nDeirdre had a unique and enduring connection to Dublin city and made a significant contribution to the arts and to Dublin city through her work with Focus Theatre and the Stanislavski Studio. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[1] Donovan\, Kathy\, The Irish Times Weekend Arts\, July 25\, 1992 ‘Memories in the Focus’. \n\n\n\n[2] Burke-Kennedy\, Declan\, Booklet Dublin Focus Theatre incorporating the Stanislavski studio\, article on The Focus Theatre by Declan Burke-Kennedy\, p. 8 \n\n\n\n[3] www.nli.ie/pdfs/mss%20lists/140_FocusTheatre.pdf\, p.6 \n\n\n\n[4] http://www.amazon.com/Children-Far-Flung-Geraldine-OConnell-Cusack/dp/1904148336 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganisations Involved / Partner Organisation(s):\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue Information:

The exhibition is a stunning collection of visual art\, photography\, poetry and film inspired by physical landscapes and the interconnectedness of life from forests to the ocean. The exhibition is on show at Rathfarnham Castle Gallery\, Rathfarnham\, Dublin D14K3T6 from Tuesday 16 September to Sunday 2 November 2025 and opens daily 9.30am – 5.30pm\, thereafter\, Wednesday – Sunday 10.30am – 5pm. A public launch takes place on Thursday 18 September 2025\, from 6-8pm\, with guest speakers and refreshments. \n\n\n\nFrom the Forest to the Ocean is inspired by reflections on nature and journeys of interconnectedness and the art of ‘letting go’\, linking physical landscapes of nature from the forests to the ocean to landscapes of the soul.  Our personal well-being is linked to the well-being of our planet on a physical\, spiritual\, emotional and intuitive level. Nature and creativity inspire us to look after ourselves\, each other\, the planet we live on and to search for more sustainable ways of living.  Join us as we reflect on ways to re-wild the landscape and re-wild the human soul\, exploring the flow of life and the art of letting go.  \n\n\n\nThe original concept for the exhibition From the Forest to the Ocean is by the curator Mary Moynihan\, a writer\, poet and creator of art and photography.  This exhibition is part of a triptych – Landscapes of the Soul (Part I)\, From the Forest to the Ocean (Part II) and a third exhibition (Part III) to be presented in 2026. It has been ‘a fortified house\, a luxurious seventeenth-century home\, a fashionable Georgian Mansion and an austere Jesuit residence’[1] It is now under State care and managed by the Office of Public Works. \n\n\n\nRathfarnham Castle was only referred to as a castle in the mid eighteenth century. It is situated on the outskirts of Dublin. It is the earliest recorded and one of the largest and most impressive of the fortified houses built in Ireland. It was commissioned C. 1583 for Adam Loftus who was at that time the Anglican Archbishop of Dublin and Lord Chancellor of Ireland.  The house passed down through seven generations of the Loftus family until 1723 when the whole estate was sold to William Connolly of Castletown\, County Kildare.  After an interval of some fifty years (1711-1767) which saw a number of tenants and owners who made alternations and additions to the house\, it was returned to the ownership of the Loftus family. There were several different owners until the Castle was declared a National Monument in 1986 and purchased for the Nation by the Office of Public Works in 1987. At the same time\, Dublin County Council acquired the grounds. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Biographies:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMary Moynihan MA \n\n\n\nWriter of Novels\, Poetry\, Films\, Plays \n\n\n\nCreator of Art and Photography \n\n\n\nCreative Reflections on Arts\, Creativity\, Equality\, Leadership and Self-Esteem \n\n\n\nMary Moynihan\, MA\, she/her\, is an award-winning author of novels\, poetry\, films and plays\, and a creator of art and photography. My art is a reflection of inner connection\, and how immigrants and nomadic artists are a part of this land. Migration is deeply rooted in my blood. I have carried two cultures\, one from where I was born and the other is this culture where I am trying to re-root myself. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtwork by Mary Moynihan and Hina Khan at Rathfarnham Castle\, Landscapes of the Soul 2024 \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biographies:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMary Moynihan MA \n\n\n\nWriter of Novels\, Poetry\, Films\, Plays \n\n\n\nCreator of Art and Photography \n\n\n\nCreative Reflections on Arts\, Creativity\, Equality\, Leadership and Self-Esteem \n\n\n\nMary Moynihan\, MA\, she/her\, is an award-winning author of novels\, poetry\, films and plays\, and a creator of art and photography.
