Integrated throughout the museum is Eternal Rebels: Irish Women Changemakers\, a visual art exhibition by artist Mary Moynihan. Blending photography\, poetry\, and storytelling\, Eternal Rebels comprises twelve storyboard artworks that appear throughout the heritage centre\, each celebrating the life and legacy of an extraordinary woman who transformed Irish history. The exhibition is included with the standard admission ticket to The Barracks Heritage Centre. \nThe stories include Constance Markievicz (1868-1927)\, Irish politician\, revolutionary nationalist\, suffragette and socialist; Eva Gore-Booth (1870-1926)\, poet\, writer\, trade unionist\, feminist\, a campaigner for equality and social justice and Hanna Sheehy-Skeffington (1877-1946)\, radical activist\, feminist\, pacifist\, human rights campaigner and one of Ireland’s foremost suffragettes. Two of the women are from Valentia Island –  Helen Blackburn (1842-1903)\, Writer\, Suffragist and Feminist Campaigner for Women’s Rights and Worker’s Rights; and Maude Jane Delap (1866-1953)\, a pioneering Marine Biologist who had a sea anemone named after her\, the ‘Edwardsia delapiae’\, which she discovered in shallow sea waters on Valentia Island’s shores. \nTwo new stories are added for this year’s annual Kerry Arts and Human Rights festival – Mary O’Connell and Janie McCarthy. Mary O’Connell (1778–1836) born in Tralee\, was an Irish woman and practical force behind the O’Connell household\, raising a large family often under difficult financial circumstances. She acted at times as the family estate manager\, family matriarch\, and trusted political confidante whose management of the O’Connell household and correspondence helped sustain one of the most influential political careers in nineteenth-century Ireland. Her surviving letters reveal an intelligent\, resilient woman whose emotional support and organisational abilities underpinned one of Ireland’s greatest political movements. Janie McCarthy (1885-1964) from Killarney\, Ireland lived in Paris during World War II and became involved in the French Resistance.  She managed to evade capture and survived the war. Her area of specialisation was in rescue work\, saving a number of lives including members of the allied intelligence services and armies. \nMary Moynihan (she/her) is an award-winning writer\, poet\, theatre and film-maker and  a creator of art and photography. Mary is Artistic Director of Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality\, and Artistic Curator for the annual Dublin Arts and Human Rights festival supported by The Arts Council. \nPresented for the Kerry Arts and Human Rights Festival 18-19 July 2026 and for the annual international Irish Arts and Human Rights Festival 9-18 October 2026 \nInformation at 087 2214245 or admin@smashingtimes.ie \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biographies:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMary Moynihan\, MA\, she/her\, is an award-winning author of novels\, plays\, poetry and films\, originally from Dublin\, Ireland. She writes fiction for young people and adults featuring stories of courage\, laughter\, tragedy\, happiness\, love\, death and action-packed adventures. Mary is the author of a young adult fantasy novel series Amergin and the Warriors of Zen. In her adult fiction\, Mary’s characters are clever\, fearless\, vulnerable\,  crazy\, and strong\, looking for love\, fun\, success and happiness. SUMMARY:Edition VII of Tintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary Journal
DESCRIPTION:Min El Mai Lal Mai – From Water to Water\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThree-Day Palestinian Cultural Day Festival (25–27 September 2026)\, celebrating Palestinian culture through art\, music\, food\, education and community events \n\n\nBuy Your Copy\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEdition VII of Tintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary Journal\n\n\n\nEdition VII of Tintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary Journal was published on Saturday\, 18 July 2026\, in The Barracks Heritage Centre\, Cahersiveen\, as part of Smashing Times’ inaugural Kerry Arts and Human Rights Festival. This is a special bilingual edition themed ‘Muintearas: Macallaí Uíbh Ráthaigh/Belonging: Echoes of Iveragh’\, incorporating both Irish and English\, and publishing six artists with a connection to Uíbh Ráthach/Iveragh in County Kerry. This is a digital edition. \n\n\n\nThe contributing artists are Paddy Bushe (poetry) and Dominika Piekarska (visual art) – who make up this edition’s Featured Artists – as well as June O’Sullivan (short fiction)\, John Goode (poetry)\, Marie O’Shea (non-fiction)\, and Ita Ryan (short fiction). The edition’s themes include belonging\, identity\, history\, place\, community\, art\, the Irish language\, nature\, and more. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWe have also included some work by Bonus Artists\, which includes an excerpt from one of the region’s – and indeed Ireland’s – most famous poems: ‘Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire’ by Eibhlín Dubh Ní Chonaill. This section also contains two poems by Mary Moynihan\, a writer\, poet\, and creator of art and photography\, and Artistic Director of Smashing Times\, who has been visiting Valentia Island for nearly two decades. Furthermore\, this edition holds an Arts in the Community Profile and Interview with the eco-social artist\, researcher\, and educator\, Dr Anita McKeown. \n\n\n\nWe would like to offer sincere thanks to our funders: Cumas Ceantar Uíbh Ráthaigh\, Kerry County Council\, and Fáilte Ireland. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen you purchase your copy of Tintreach\, it will be emailed to you within 48 hours\, Monday – Friday \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary Journal is a new publication in the Irish arts scene. Published quarterly in digital format\, it features works from across the artistic spectrum and combines up-and-coming voices with those of more established artists. Each edition of Tintreach includes three or four artworks by a Featured Artist\, a Featured Artist Interview\, work by three other artists (usually with multiple artworks by each)\, and occasionally an article contribution by Mary Moynihan\, Smashing Times Artistic Director and a writer and creator of art and photography. The journal appears in January\, April\, July\, and October. Tintreach is edited by writer Féilim James. \n\n\n\nTintreach was established as a continuation and major expansion of the Tintreach section of the monthly Smashing Times Newsletter. Previous contributors to Tintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary Journal and the Tintreach section of our newsletter include poets Jessica Traynor\, Mary O’Malley\, and Annemarie Ní Churreáin; Senator Lynn Ruane; 2023 Nobel Peace Prize-winner Narges Mohammadi; director and playwright Dijana Milošević; rapper-singer Saint Levant; and many more. \n\n\n\n‘Tintreach’ is the Irish word for lightning\, which for us symbolises the spark that animates art\, making it striking and engaging. What sets Tintreach apart as a publication? Firstly\, we are open to all artforms that can be read or viewed in page format. Secondly\, each artist selected for publication will have multiple pieces included\, unless their contribution is a short story\, non-fiction essay\, or novel extract. The purpose of this is to offer artists\, especially emerging artists\, more exposure than a journal publication would normally offer. \n\n\n\nTintreach ISSN: ISSN 3088-7070 \n\n\n\nAddress: Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality\, 30 Sandycove Road\, Sandycove\, Dublin\, A96 V9P1 \n  \n  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOrganisations Involved / Partner Organisation(s):\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue Information:

The programme is based on 6-7 solo exhibitions and 2-3 group or thematic exhibitions per year.  Green On Red Gallery participates in international art fairs and the gallery’s artists regularly exhibit abroad in both private and public venues. \n\n\n\nAlong with our programme of exhibitions at home and abroad\, the gallery offers a consultancy service tailored to individual needs:  \n\n\n\n Building individual private collections  \n\n\n\n Consulting with companies and organisations to supply artwork for their collections  \n\n\n\n Finding the right piece for a particular location  \n\n\n\n Advising on outdoor or public art projects \n\n\n\nVisit the Green on Red website \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biographies:\n\n\n\nBrian Hegarty \n\n\n\nHegarty’s practice sits somewhere between painting\, sculpture\, and assemblage\, and resists settling into any one of them. Working with found and everyday materials\, mainly paper and  card he builds layered surfaces through accumulation\, alteration\, and repair. \n\n\n\nRather than hiding how the works are made\, they are self-explanatory.    Visible seams\, exposed edges\, runny glue\, the evidence of the hand are all apparent and exposed. Cutting\, folding\, layering\, and gluing are both method and meaning — structures built provisionally\, likely to fail\, not built to last. This instability isn’t separate from the work’s meaning; it is the meaning\, mirroring an existential unease the work doesn’t resolve\, only makes visible\, and briefly\, holds together. \n\n\n\nBrian Hegarty is an artist based in Drogheda County Louth. He was born in Dublin in 1970 and graduated from D.I.T. College of Fine Art in 1994. He has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. He runs thirtythree-45\, a multi-platform arts project working independently and in collaboration with other artists\, musicians\, and arts organisations. Most recently he initiated The KIOSK Project Art Space\, a small artist-run project space on Narrow West Street in Drogheda. \n\n\n\n\n\nJúlius KollerDelving beyond art as a practice\, Koller’s work explores art as a medium of cultural action. In a bid to investigate communications and actions beyond their institutional and political definitions his work hones its focus on everyday gestures and rituals. In doing so he creates the concept of “‘cultural institutions”. \n\n\n\nIn late 1980s Czechoslovakia\, Koller found himself deeply concerned with the Czechoslovakian Spring liberation. This event saw Warsaw troops invade Czechoslovakia in a bid to suppress the Spring liberation process within the region. At the same time\, there was an exponential growth in the economic shift to a globally driven free market society. This period of change prompted much reflection  – specifically the contradiction of Utopia and real life. Here his series U.F.O.-naut J.K. was conceived. An almost life-long series of self-portraits released annually\, many pieces feature Koller himself using ironic gestures and using wildly various symbols and everyday objects like nets\, tennis rackets\, table-tennis bats\, his own head of hair\, and so on. \n\n\n\nThe (otznik) question mark recurs throughout his work. As the collection evolves so does the question mark. He weaves the symbol in throughout a wide variety of materials and formats. The symbol serves not only as a reference and prompt to question politics\, society and environment but also as a universal term: it stood for openness\, willingness to explore\, uncertainty and doubt. In his work Meditacia / Meditation (U.F.O.)  1983 Július is pictured with his head perched and eyes closed\, holding only a piece of paper. The piece of paper contains a small pencil illustration – a circle drawn unsteadily. This sketch encapsulates the spirit of the man. Here too\, the subject of free expression has become an inquiry\, one that is not only focused on social conditions but on one’s own capacity for action.  \n\n\n\nFor an Irish equivalent\, think the late Maurice O’Connell\, an art rogue\, a performer\, a wanderer and a unique presence in the Irish art world of the 1990s. He took part in the first Manifesta ( 1996 )\, Europe’s only Nomadic Biennial of Contemporary Art. He had a solo exhibition The Last Great Buffalo Hunt in Green on red Gallery in 1997. \n\n\n\n\n\nNil Yalter \n\n\n\nBorn in Cairo and raised in Istanbul\, Nil Yalter is a pioneering Turkish artist whose work has been shaped by her experiences across different cultures\, traditions and political landscapes. Drawing on her Anatolian heritage while embracing the experimental possibilities of contemporary art\, Yalter has developed a practice that spans more than five decades. \n\n\n\nHer work explores migration\, identity\, feminism and social justice through the stories of those often overlooked. Combining visual art\, performance\, technology and traditions drawn from oral and visual cultures\, Yalter examines the resilience and complexity of human experience while giving voice to marginalised communities and questioning the social and political structures that shape their lives. \n\n\n\nIn Lord Byron Meets the Shaman Woman (2009)\, Nil Yalter draws on her longstanding interest in shamanism\, nomadic cultures and the cultural histories of Anatolia to revisit the figure of the female shaman. Combining performance\, costume\, archival imagery and text\, the work pays tribute to women who occupied significant spiritual\, social and intellectual roles within their communities. By staging an imagined encounter between the shaman woman and Lord Byron\, Yalter brings together different histories and cultural perspectives\, questioning how identities and traditions have been represented and understood. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOrganisations Involved / Partner Organisation(s):\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue Information:

Working across fine art\, tattoos\, videos\, and murals\, the artist employs a surrealist language infused with magical realism to create visual stories that blur the limits between reality and myth. \n\n\n\nJessica spent eleven years as a tattoo artist\, a period that permanently shaped her understanding of narrative. In that role\, stories were entrusted and inscribed\, a collaborative act that demanded integrity and a focus on the body as the first site for a visual tale. This experience remains the quiet anchor for all her work. \n\n\n\nJessica now builds worlds across painting\, murals\, and video\, drawing from a well of dreams and old folklore to create images that feel both familiar and strangely new. The curiosity that guided her hand on skin now guides her interdisciplinary practice. It is a practice of genuine exploration\, evidenced by an Artist in the Community Scheme grant for collaborative public work and features in 10 group exhibitions\, including the group show Voice of Dreams for Visionary Arts. \n\n\n\nJessica’s work has been featured in Tintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary Journal \n\n\n\nSee Jessica’s Instagram @artbyjroiz \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGillian Lambe is a visual artist whose practice explores how we experience\, carry and remember the people and places that shape us and how this can influence our sense of belonging. \n\n\n\nShe is especially drawn to the tension between opposing states: connection and separation\, containment and openness\, permanence and change. \n\n\n\nShe uses colour and gesture\, texture and form to research and explore these themes. She gives space to the viewers to bring their own memories\, associations and experiences to the work and to find their own points of connection within it. \n\n\n\nOriginally from Cavan\, Gillian is currently based in Dublin. She has studied drawing\, sculpture and ceramics at NCAD (CEAD) and works across different materials to explore emotion\, connection and environment within her work. \n\n\n\nCurrent and recent exhibitions include the 3rd Annual Exhibition\, An Chéad Tine Art Gallery 3rd\, Kilkenny (selected by Maurice Quillinan)\, ‘Threshold’ The Market House\, Dunleer\, The Easter Competition\, Glebe Gallery (OPW)\, Donegal\, ‘Chrysalis’ & ‘Emerging Perspectives’\, Reynold’s Gallery\, Dublin\, ‘Beyond Words: Art & the Unknown’\, Herman’s Auctioneer’s Modern & Contemporary\, Dublin\, Smashing Times Gallery ‘Solstice Light’\, Dublin and Signal Arts Centre Members show in Wicklow. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nViktoriia was  born in 2005 in Kharkiv\, Ukraine. Viktoriia currently lives and works in Cavan\, County Cavan. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHina Khan was born in born in Pakistan in 1980 and completed an MFA\, majoring in Miniature Painting from Pakistan. Hina uses miniature in her work as the intricacy and delicacy of the brush work has a unique identity. Hina’s work began as a mixture of traditional and contemporary miniature and her practice has now expanded to include small and large-scale installation\, videos and 3D. \n\n\n\nAccording to Hina ‘My work is a constant search for the best way to interpret ideas and to express my own ideologies through symbolism.  I am creating a dialogue through my art. My art is a reflection of inner connection\, and how immigrants and nomadic artists are a part of this land. Migration is deeply rooted in my blood. I have carried two cultures\, one from where I was born and the other is this culture where I am trying to re-root myself. Sometimes a situation is not in our control\, but life always takes us on different voyages. This journey has built up a constant transition in my art\, personality\, and in terms of experimentation\, enabling me to evolve my artistic practice.’ \n\n\n\nHina has participated in a number of groups shows in Pakistan from 2002 to 2011. Hina came to Ireland in 2015 and participated in a number of exhibitions in Dublin\, Laois\, Mayo\, and Cork. Hina was awarded several residencies with Fire Station Arts Center\, Create Ireland\, West Cork Art Center and Cow House Studio and has displayed solo exhibitions at Ballina Art Center\, Mayo\, and Stradbally Art house\, Laois. \n\n\n\nHina’s art pieces are held in the permanent collection of The Arts Council of Ireland. She is the recipient of several awards from The Arts Council of Ireland\, Create Ireland\, and from different counties. She is the recipient of an R&D award from Create Ireland in collaboration with Tomasz Madajezak under the mentorship of Jesse Jones and is also collaborating with filmmaker David Bickley. Hina’s art pieces were commissioned for State of the Art: The Nation State as both Violator and Protector of Human Rights (2022) and for States of Independence (2023). Both projects were f presented by Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality and funded by The Arts Council. \n\n\n\nHina says that ‘as an artist\,  I am inspired by Sadequain\, Michelangelo\, Picasso\, Frida Kahlo\, Shahzia Sikander and Anselm Kiefer.’ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmna is a Cork-based Pakistani born visual artist and Associate Member of Sample-Studios\, Art Nomads\, Smashing Times and Angelica Network. She recently established the Ireland-Pakistan Arts Exchange (IPAE) to bring both art communities together through creating opportunities for networking and exchange. She is a recipient of Arts Council Ireland Visual Artist Bursary Award\, Professional Development Award 2020 and Dilkusha Award 2020. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIqra is a multidisciplinary artist currently undertaking a Master’s in Art and the Contemporary World at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD)\, Dublin. Working primarily with acrylic painting and neo-miniature as a visual language\, she also experiments with glass and other materials. \n\n\n\nHer practice explores identity\, displacement\, belonging and coexistence\, with particular interest in how people carry cultural histories while forming new relationships with the places and communities they inhabit. Drawing on her experience of moving between cultural spaces\, she questions inherited systems of thought and the cultural frameworks that shape how we understand ourselves\, others and difference. \n\n\n\nThrough symbolism\, pattern\, architectural forms and inherited visual languages\, Iqra explores the process of unlearning and reconsidering ideas that can appear fixed or universal. Rather than rejecting cultural inheritance\, her work seeks to question and reinterpret it\, opening possibilities for alternative ways of seeing\, knowing and belonging. \n\n\n\nHer recent work considers peace through coexistence\, equality and the possibility of sharing space while allowing difference and individuality to remain visible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFéilim James is a novelist\, poet\, and playwright from Dublin\, Ireland. In 2024\, his poem ‘Dream of an Atrocity’ was shortlisted for the New Irish Writing: Best Poetry category at the Irish Book Awards. SUMMARY:Céad Míle Collection
DESCRIPTION:Min El Mai Lal Mai – From Water to Water\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThree-Day Palestinian Cultural Day Festival (25–27 September 2026)\, celebrating Palestinian culture through art\, music\, food\, education and community events \n\n\nA new Céad Míle Collection will be unveiled at a public launch event in Dublin bringing together fashion\, art and activism in a celebration of a modern Ireland defined not by who it excludes\, but by who it welcomes. \n\n\n\nBook Your Place\n\n\n\nNo Booking Necessary \n\n\n\nArtists\n\n\n\nFarouk858\, Multidisciplinary Artist and Art Director \n\n\n\nHelen Steele\, Award-Winning Irish Fashion Designer and Artist \n\n\n\nFull Event Details\n\n\n\nThe Céad Míle Collection will reimagine Ireland’s flag as a statement of belonging\, solidarity and Céad Míle Fáilte at a time when national symbols are increasingly being used to divide. GOAL NextGen\, with the support of their creative agency THINKHOUSE\, is reclaiming the Irish flag as a symbol of welcome with the launch of the Céad Míle Collection\, a new creative collaboration with Irish fashion designers Farouk Alao and Helen Steele. The venue will be announced in the coming days. \n\n\n\nInspired by Ireland’s reputation of Céad Míle Fáilte\, a hundred thousand welcomes\, the collection asks a simple question: what should the Irish flag represent? For GOAL NextGen and the designers\, the answer is clear: welcome\, belonging\, solidarity and community. \n\n\n\nAt a time when national symbols are increasingly being used to create division\, exclusion and fear\, the Céad Míle Collection seeks to reclaim one of Ireland’s most recognisable symbols for what it should represent\, an Ireland that is open\, compassionate and welcoming to all. \n\n\n\nThe need for that welcome is increasingly urgent. Recent research found that 66% of non-white people in Ireland experienced racism in the past 12 months [1]. While research conducted by GOAL NextGen and Thinkhouse (2024) found that 80% agree that all people who call Ireland home deserve to feel like they belong here\, and 82% agree that creative culture helps people to connect with each other and overcome differences. Against this backdrop\, the collection challenges the idea that national pride and inclusion are opposing forces\, and instead celebrates an Ireland where the two belong together. \n\n\n\nCombining Farouk Alao’s contemporary design approach with Helen Steele’s bold artistic style\, the Céad Míle Collection will transform the colours and symbolism of the Irish flag into a one-of-a-kind fashion statement celebrating global solidarity in a modern\, diverse and inclusive Ireland. \n\n\n\nMore than a fashion collection\, it is a visual act of reclamation\, demonstrating how creativity can challenge division\, start conversations and offer a different vision of what Irish identity can look like. \n\n\n\nVictoria Walshe\, Head of Global Citizenship\, GOAL Global\, said: \n\n\n\n“We don’t want to surrender the Irish flag to anyone who uses it to say who belongs here and who doesn’t. The Irish flag belongs to all of us\, and its message should be Céad Míle Fáilte. At GOAL NextGen\, we believe creativity has the power to start conversations that politics often can’t. Through this collection\, we want to remind people that Irish identity doesn’t have to be about exclusion. It can be about welcome\, belonging and community\, values that are at the heart of GOAL’s work and Ireland at its best. As part of a global humanitarian organisation\, we see every day the importance of standing in solidarity with communities facing conflict\, displacement and crisis. This collection is a reminder that empathy\, compassion and human connection should guide how we relate to one another\, both at home and around the world.” \n\n\n\nFarouk Alao said: \n\n\n\n“You can travel to the far corners of the globe and people can still sense that you’re Irish before you’ve said a word. That’s what clothing does too\, it speaks identity before language gets the chance. I’m excited to build something with Helen that puts Céad Míle at the centre of what that identity means.” \n\n\n\nHelen Steele added: \n\n\n\n“There’s something deeply sad about seeing the Irish flag and immediately assuming it represents hostility rather than pride. Our national flag should be a symbol that makes people feel welcome\, not wary. Collaborating with Farouk on this collection gives us the chance to reclaim that symbol and reimagine it as a reflection of the Ireland so many of us believe in: one built on kindness\, hospitality and shared humanity. I hope it encourages people to see the flag\, and what it means to belong here\, in a different light.” \n\n\n\nThe Céad Míle Collection will be unveiled at a public launch event in Dublin this autumn\, bringing together fashion\, art and activism in a celebration of a modern Ireland defined not by who it excludes\, but by who it welcomes. Visit the GOAL wesbite for information on the upcoming campaign launch. \n\n\n\nFollow the campaign @GOALNextGen \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biographies:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFarouk858\, Multidisciplinary Artist and Art Director \n\n\n\nFarouk858 is a multidisciplinary artist and art director working across installation\, digital\, fashion\, and community. His practice is about creating spaces\, objects\, and experiences that question how we see ourselves and each other – always curious\, always evolving. Through 858\, the artist has built projects that move between art and culture: from exhibitions at Tate\, IMMA\, Outernet\, and Temple Bar Gallery + Studios\, to collaborations with brands like Google\, Guinness\, Peloton\, and JD Sports. The artist runs 858 Art Club\, a weekly creative community that brings people together to learn\, make\, and show art. \n\n\n\nThe work of Farouk858 balances play and purpose. Whether it’s a public artwork\, an immersive installation\, a brand campaign\, or a piece of clothing\, the goal is the same: make moreArt\, make moreNoise. SUMMARY:Walking Through Women’s History 1916-1923
DESCRIPTION:Min El Mai Lal Mai – From Water to Water\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThree-Day Palestinian Cultural Day Festival (25–27 September 2026)\, celebrating Palestinian culture through art\, music\, food\, education and community events \n\n\nThese are women who lived\, worked\, and resisted in Rathmines and Ranelagh during Ireland’s struggle for independence from the 1900s on – Constance (Countess) Markievicz (1868–1927)\, Dr Kathleen Lynn (1874–1955)\, Hanna Sheehy Skeffington (1877–1946)\, and Grace Evelyn Gifford Plunkett (1888–1955). \n\n\n\nBook Your Place\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFull Event Details\n\n\n\nThis walking tour explores the landscape of Rathmines and Ranelagh through the lives of four revolutionary women — Constance (Countess) Markievicz (1868–1927)\, Dr Kathleen Lynn (1874–1955)\, Hanna Sheehy Skeffington (1877–1946)\, and Grace Evelyn Gifford Plunkett (1888–1955)  — who lived\, worked\, and resisted in Rathmines and Ranelagh during Ireland’s struggle for independence from the 1900s on. \n\n\n\nBlending storytelling with site-specific reflection\, the tour visits key locations connected to these women\, revealing how homes\,  churches\, and streets became backdrops for radical action\, cultural resistance\, and feminist legacy. Participants are invited to reflect on how these women’s contributions are remembered (or erased)\, and what it means to reclaim their stories as part of Ireland’s Future Heritage. \n\n\n\nThis 60 minute guided walking tour brings to life the invisible heritage of women’s activism\, placing it within the physical and civic architecture of Dublin. It asks: What histories are we preserving? Whose voices are missing from the buildings we pass every day? In highlighting these figures\, the tour reclaims space for a more inclusive\, living heritage. The tour walks by historic homes\, churches and civic landmarks ending with a reflection on women’s representation in public memory and space. \n\n\n\nNotable women from Irish history who lived in Rathmines and Ranelagh are: \n\n\n\n\nConstance Markievicz (1868-1927) was an Irish politician\, revolutionary nationalist\, suffragette and socialist. Constance owned Surrey House on Leinster Road\, Rathmines\, which was used as a training base for Na Fianna before 1916. Constance becomes the first woman elected to the British House of Commons and first female Cabinet Minister in Europe. Her advice to young women\, ‘’leave your jewels and gold wand in the bank and buy a revolver’’.\n\n\n\nHanna Sheehy Skeffington (1877–1946) was a radical activist\, feminist\, pacifist and human rights campaigner and one of Ireland’s foremost suffragettes.\n\n\n\nDr Kathleen Lynn (1874–1955) lived and practised as a GP at  9 Belgrave Road\, Rathmines from about 1904 onwards and served as Chief Medical Officer for the Irish Citizen Army in the 1916 Rising. Dr Lynn later co-founded St Ultan’s Hospital on Charlemont Street with Madeleine ffrench Mullen  (1880–1944) who lived with Kathleen at Belgrave Road\, Rathmines.\n\n\n\nGrace Evelyn Gifford (1888-1955) was born and raised in Rathmines. She studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art and worked in Dublin as an illustrator and caricaturist. Grace was a supporter of Irish independence. She married Joseph Mary Plunkett\, a signatory to the 1916 proclamation in Kilmainham Gaol shortly before his execution for his role in the 1916 Rising.\n\n\n\n\nIn addition to hearing the incredible stories of these four women\, enjoy a tour of the neighbourhood touching on Rathmines and Ranelagh as told through the stories of women from the Irish Revolutionary period 1913 to 1923 who lived or frequented this historic part of Dublin. During the walking tour we will venture past historical buildings and parks including the old Rathmines Town Hall and Clock Tower and Belgrave Square Park. \n\n\n\nCoastal + Urban Guided Walks: Information for all walks and tours\n\n\n\nWe offer three guided walking trails. \n\n\n\nTwo coastal walks begin and end at theSmashing Times Visual Art Gallery\, 30 Sandycove Road\, Dublin\, A96V9P1 taking participants along the seacoast from Sandycove to Dún Laoghaire and back. Walk One: Stories by the Sea – Guided Walk on Stories of Irish Changemakers  in History shares stories of Irish Human Rights Defenders in the past\, while Walk Two: Art by the Sea – Stories of Irish Artists\, Writers and Visionaries explores the lives and work of Irish artists. SUMMARY:Trócaire Documentary Screening and Panel Discussion – End Fossil Power
DESCRIPTION:Min El Mai Lal Mai – From Water to Water\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThree-Day Palestinian Cultural Day Festival (25–27 September 2026)\, celebrating Palestinian culture through art\, music\, food\, education and community events \n\n\nBook Your Place\n\n\n\nBook here \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFull Event Details\n\n\n\nJoin us for the premiere of Trócaire’s powerful new documentary film\, End Fossil Power\, followed by an inspiring panel discussion on climate justice and the transition to a clean\, renewable future. Complimentary food and refreshments will be served prior to the screening which takes place on Friday 16 October 2026\, 7-8.30pm\, at Flux Dublin\, 4 Chatham Row\, Dublin 2\, D02PA06 for the 2026 Irish Arts and Human Rights festival. \n\n\n\nThe documentary highlights how climate change is driving poverty and injustice across the globe – particularly in countries like Malawi. Communities there have done the least to cause this global emergency\, yet they are on the frontlines as climate-related disaster hit. The documentary critically examines the role of the fossil fuel industry in delaying vital climate action. \n\n\n\nThe documentary screening is followed by a panel discussion on how we can collectively take action to end fossil power and transition to a world powered by clean\, renewable energy. Food and refreshments will be available before the screening. \n\n\n\nTrócaire emphasizes that the climate crisis is a profound human rights crisis because it causes widespread denial of basic rights—such as food\, water\, health\, and safety—in vulnerable communities who did the least to cause global emissions. Wealthy nations and major corporations hold responsibility for excess emissions\, yet poor countries in the Global South suffer the most severe droughts\, floods\, and loss of livelihoods. \n\n\n\nThis event is presented by Trócaire \n\n\n\nTrócaire is an International Non-Governmental Organisation (INGO). We work with local partners in the world’s most at-risk communities and with people in Ireland to tackle the underlying causes of poverty and injustice and respond to the crises they create. Together we bring about positive and lasting change for a just world. Trócaire is the Irish language word for “compassion”. Since it was founded by the Irish Catholic Bishops in 1973\, Trócaire has put the compassion of the Irish people into action. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOrganisations Involved / Partner Organisation(s):\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue Information:

Global military spending now exceeds €3 trillion every year. Who benefits and where is the equivalent investment in peace? Instead of spending 1.7 billion on defence\, should the Irish government spend this money on housing\,  job creation and peace? Why can billions be found for war spending while poverty homelessness\, wealth inequality and climate breakdown continue to worsen? These are the debates we need to have in Irish society and the media.  Artist Mary Moynihan says ‘Ireland can be a leading voice for peace. Defend our neutrality\, defend the Triple lock and challenge the growing influence of military and corporate interests on public policy and governments. As our former president Michael D. Higgins said\, we need to ‘make space for peace.’   \n\n\n\nThis is followed by a guest artist interview with Aoife McAtamney\, a multidisciplinary artist working with contemporary dance\, choreography\, filmmaking\, music and education. Aoife is  Artistic Director of Daughter Of A Drum\, and a part of Choreography Connects\, a CoisCéim artist-led residency project. Enjoy a visual art exhibition\, artist talk and live\, on-site portraiture sittings presented by artist Kiz Rutherford as part of The Queer Portrait Project\, an ongoing\, grassroots project creating a series of intimate\, affirming portraits depicting members of Ireland’s LGBTQ+ community. \n\n\n\nSince the start of 2026 artist Kiz Rutherford has been creating a series of portraits of members of Irelands queer community in response to the rising anti-LGBTQIA + violence and rhetoric\, and the simultaneous reduction in rights and systemic oppression of our global community. This project is for the community by the community and serves as a vital artistic response to the alarming global rise in anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric\, systemic policy shifts\, and targeted violence—from political rollbacks in the US and UK\, to local struggles like Ireland’s gender-affirming care waitlists\, and recent tragedies like Berlin Pride. Standing firmly on the principle that trans and queer rights are human rights\, The Queer Portrait Project showcases and illustrates the profound diversity\, strength\, and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community in the face of growing oppression and hate. \n\n\n\nThe 2026 Irish Arts and Human Rights festival offering of The Queer Portrait Project is presented through multiple interactive formats. Come to the Smashing Times Visual Art Gallery and view an exhibition of portrait artworks created to date\, enjoy an artist talk with artist Kiz Rutherford in conversation with Smashing Times festival producer Ciara Hayes talking about The Queer Portrait project and take part in live on-site portraiture sittings. \n\n\n\n\nExhibition: A collection of complete portrait paintings by visual artist Kiz Rutherford presented on site as a pop-up exhibition at the Smashing Times Visual Art Gallery on 18 October 2026\, from 10am to 6pm\n\n\n\nArtist Talk with Kiz Rutherford: An engaging discussion between Smashing Times festival producer Ciara Hayes and artist Kiz Rutherford\, exploring the origins\, political context\, and community-building goals of The Queer Portrait Project\, taking place at the Smashing Times Visual Art Gallery on 18 October 2026 from 1 to 1.30pm\n\n\n\nLive Sittings: Live 1-to-2-hour sessions where festival-goers sit for a conversation\, preliminary sketch\, and reference photos with the artist\, adding to the creation of intimate\, affirming portraits of LGBTQ+ individuals\, taking place at the Smashing Times Visual Art Gallery on 18 October 2026 from 2-6pm\n\n\n\n\nArtist Kiz Rutherford writes \n\n\n\n\nThere is undoubtedly a massive recent shift towards homophobia and transphobia on a global scale at a policy level that has encouraged and enabled hatred at all levels of society to be seen as acceptable. In my lifetime we saw an increase in rights and acceptance for the queer community but things have dramatically shifted recently from the systemic erasure of the communities history and rights to the oppression on a daily basis. This is clearly seen at a policy level in the US and UK and elsewhere while the Irish continues to fights its own battles with the huge waiting lists for gender affirming care. Trans rights and queer rights are human rights\, I write this in the aftermath of the tragedy at Berlin pride\, feeling more fiercely than ever that we must continue to fight. \n\n\n\n\nArtist Biographies:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBased in Dublin\, Kiz Rutherford creates figurative paintings and drawings exploring the interplay between light and darkness. Their work\, particularly the “We’re Losing the Light” series\, captures the emotional resonance found in fleeting moments of illumination against shadow. Through portraiture and life drawing\, Kiz examines how light shapes our perception of form and feeling\, revealing both vulnerability and strength in human subjects. Their project\, the Queer Portrait Project\, recently previewed at Rua Red\, extends their practice to create intimate\, affirming portraits of LGBTQ+ individuals. Committed to fostering artistic community\, Kiz also runs weekly life drawing sessions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nVenue Information:

SUMMARY:Launch of 'The Refugee Chronicles'\, a new novel by Evgeny Shtorn with Reading + Conversation with the author
DESCRIPTION:Min El Mai Lal Mai – From Water to Water\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThree-Day Palestinian Cultural Day Festival (25–27 September 2026)\, celebrating Palestinian culture through art\, music\, food\, education and community events \n\n\nDrawing on Shtorn’s asylum journey\, the book offers a deeply human account of displacement and the experience of Ireland’s Direct Provision system. Presented by Skein Press. \n\n\n\nBook Your Place\n\n\n\nAdmission Free. No booking required \n\n\n\nArtists\n\n\n\nEvgeny Shtorn\, writer\, activist and researcher \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFull Event Details\n\n\n\nSkein Press intends to launch our new novel ‘The Refugee Chronicles’ by Evgeny Shtorn on Wednesday 21 October 2026\, from 6 to 7pm at Hodges Figgis Dublin. The launch will include a reading from the novel\, followed by a conversation between the author and the event chair. \n\n\n\nDrawn from the diaries Shtorn kept throughout his asylum journey\, The Refugee Chronicles is a deeply human portrait of displacement in twenty-first-century Europe. Part fiction\, part memoir\, it lifts the veil on the patently absurd and fundamentally flawed system of Direct Provision – a world that is often discussed in the abstract but rarely narrated from within. \n\n\n\nThe Refugee Chronicles draws from Shtorn’s personal experience as an asylum seeker in Ireland. Originally from St Petersburg\, Shtorn was forced to flee Russia in 2018 due to government scrutiny of his activist work in human rights and LGBT advocacy. In 2019\, he was granted international protection in the Republic of Ireland. His experience of claiming asylum made him question clear-cut boundaries between the West and the East along the lines of guarantees and protections of human rights\, and this experience is what drove him to write this book. \n\n\n\nThe book was originally written in Russian and first published by an independent press\, Poryadok Slov\, in St. Petersburg in 2020\, with the support of Heinrich Boell Stiftung. This foundation was subsequently designated an ‘undesirable organisation’ in Russia\, which made the book unavailable on Russian territory. Skein is now publishing\, for the first time\, an English edition\, expertly and empathetically translated by Dr Alexandra Novitskaya\, whose research specialities include queer migration and political asylum\, LGBTQ human rights\, and geopolitics of homo- and transphobia. This edition provides vital counter-narrative to the current discourse around migration and asylum seeking in Ireland and the wider European context. \n\n\n\nThis event is presented by Skein Press \n\n\n\nSkein curates and publishes thought-provoking stories not commonly featured in the literary arts in Ireland. We are passionate about storytelling and counter-storytelling in all its forms and facilitate writers and artists to bring their work to the public through traditional publishing as well as other media. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biographies:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvgeny Shtorn is a writer\, activist and researcher from St Petersburg\, Russia. Forced to leave his home country in 2018 he was granted international protection in Ireland in 2019. She began her professional career in 2011 by working with Michael Keegan Dolan (IE)\, Liz Roche (IE) and Lea Anderson (UK) as part of Step Up Dance Project. She then worked with Ríonach Ní Néill (IE)\, Catherine Young Dance (IE)\, Emma Martin (IE) and Akiko Kitamura (JP) before starting touring nationally and internationally with John Scott-IMDT (IE) and Nacera Belaza (FR)\, with over 150 performances in 52 venues across 12 countries. \n\n\n\nEarly 2021\, she started developing her own body of work through “Dances for Nobody”\, where she questions the notion of performance. Then with “A dance”\, an ongoing artistic research through raw movement and sound that translates into public performances in unconventional spaces. She is currently working on a multidisciplinary event conceived as a physical journey through a space and the time frame of her personal dance evolution. At the core of her research is the movement and sound outside of the question of style/genre or technique\, as well as the exploration of the relationships and tensions between public-personal\, inside-outside\, visible-invisible. \n\n\n\nHer dance work can be described as raw\, repetitive\, highly physical and emanating from within. She is working with the belief that dance is rooted in human existence and that there is no confusion in the public perception of a choreographic work. Therefore\, she is interested in community works where she tries to go back to the beginning and work around an absolute idea of movement/dance. \n\n\n\nMagdalena Hylak was the Galway Dance Artist in Residence for 2023-2024.She is the recipient of funding from the Arts Council of Ireland (Agility Award 2021\, Commission Award-GDP 2021\, Dance Bursary Award 2022) and the Galway County Council (Artist Support Scheme 2022). \n\n\n\nShe has been commissioned by Galway Dance Days (2012)\, Galway Dance Project (2016\, 2020\, 2021)\, Clifden Arts Festival (2022 & 2023) and Tipperary Dance Festival (2023). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBoris Charrion is a French movement and performance artist born in 2002. After studying contemporary dance in the regional conservatory of Lyon\, he entered the National Superior Conservatory of Music and Dance of Lyon where he had the opportunity to broaden his artistic horizons\, notably through various collaborations with musicians\, graphists\, composers and space designers. During his studies there\, he has worked with different choreographers such as DD Dorvillier\, Collectif A/R\, Ashley Chen. Performing Study for the Valeska Gert pavilion by Eszter Salamon for the 16th Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art has been a major part of his artistic development. Carrying a political and provocative performance for four months in a public space was a revelation to him of how performative work could be captivating and concretely rooted in current social issues. His different internships with the Ballet of the Grand Theatre of Geneva\, Carte Blanche and the choreographer Katerina Andreou have made him more aware of the reality of the dance world and of how he wants to situate himself in it. After the creation of Spatium ex-materia in 2022\, he wants to cultivate this thirst to create with his collective La niche. He is currently a member of SUB.LAB.PRO The Ensemble Program in Budapest. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlessandra Azeviche is a leading Afro-Brazilian dancer with performances at major Irish festivals with her group Criola Dance and the first woman to teach Capoeira in Ireland.Since moving to Ireland in 2015\, Alessandra  has worked with contemporary choreographers Catherine Young\, John Scott and more as well as Dublin City Council\, Axis Ballymun\, Carlow Arts\, Dublin Fringe Festivals and the Brazilian Embassy.
