Presented as part of The Art of Nature – Protecting our Forests and Oceans\, a project using creative methodologies and digital technologies in the Cahersiveen area to promote biodiversity and environmental awareness with a focus on oceans and forests\, using creativity to celebrate the beauty of trees and oceans\, the importance of biodiversity and our deep connections to nature. \n\n\n\nThe Art of Nature is implemented by Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality in partnership with Acard and The Barracks Heritage Centre\, Cahersiveen\, supported by South Kerry Development Partnership CLG\, Leader Programme 2023–2027. \n\n\n\nThe Art of Nature: Protecting Our Forests and Oceans\n\n\n\n Creative Approaches to the Environment\, Sustainability\, and Social Justice \nSmashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality presents The Art of Nature: Protecting Our Forests and Oceans\, a unique project using the arts\, creative methodologies\, and digital technologies in the Cahersiveen and South Kerry area to celebrate the beauty of forests and oceans\, the importance of biodiversity\, and our deep connections to nature. The project uses the arts and creativity to promote practical awareness-raising and training in relation to environmental justice\, with a focus on biodiversity\, sustainability\, and human rights. \nThe Art of Nature runs from August 2025 to July 2026 and is implemented by Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality in partnership with Acard and The Old Barracks Heritage Centre\, Cahersiveen\, supported by South Kerry Development Partnership CLG\, Leader Programme 2023–2027. The focus is on sustainable development for the rural environment. A Project Information and Biodiversity Leaflet will be distributed to share information on biodiversity\, connections between the forests and the ocean\, and the magic of local biodiverse green spaces and ways to protect those spaces into the future. \nThis project aims to work with local communities in the Cahersiveen area to raise awareness and identify practical measures to be implemented to build the health and resilience of biodiversity in our areas\, contributing to broader environmental efforts\, both locally and globally. The aim is to use creative processes and digital technologies alongside skills development to build local capacity to promote biodiversity and sustainability linked to social justice and to identify key steps local communities can take to ensure the long-term sustainability of the country and to protect and nurture the natural environment. \nThe project beautifully intertwines live performance and creative science-based workshops with environmental themes\, to promote biodiversity and sustainability linked to social justice. Artists working on the project include Mary Moynihan\, a writer\, poet\, and creator of art and photography; Ciara Hayes\, Arts Facilitator and Producer; and Freda Manweiler\, Arts Facilitator and Producer. Activities include 10 environmental performing art roadshows featuring a promenade show called The Art of Trees followed by a town-hall style meet-up or discussion forum and 10 science-based creative art workshops conducted with five schools\, five community groups and the general public. \nThe Earth naturally captures more than half of the CO2 released into the atmosphere\, with its forests and oceans playing a critical role as carbon sinks. However\, this role is being compromised by deforestation and ocean acidification – two issues that are squarely on the agenda for negotiations in relation to climate justice. Cahersiveen and the surrounding areas of the South Kerry region are rich in natural assets. However\, the natural environment including the oceans\, forests\, trees and plants are experiencing increased pressure in relation to biodiversity.  Join The Art of Nature as we work together to support the environment and protect biodiversity into the future. \n  \nPAST EVENTS \nThe Art of Trees by Mary Moynihan \nLive performance and post-show discussion reflecting on trees and forests\, the importance of biodiversity and our connections to nature. Each show is followed by a townhall-style community meet-up (post show discussion) to discuss creative ways to protect the environment and human rights. The guest speaker is Elis Martinelli from Sea Synergy Marine Awareness Centre\, Cahersiveen\, Co Kerry. \nThe Art of Trees by Mary Moynihan is a live\, immersive\, environmental performance blending theatre\, poetry\, and music to celebrate the beauty of trees and forests\, the importance of biodiversity\, and our deep connections to nature. Enjoy a magical performance\, as we regale you with storytelling\, poetry and music reflecting on trees and forests\, the importance of biodiversity and our deep connections to nature. \n  \nThe show was presented for ten performances including: \n\nTech Amergin Arts and Education Centre\, Waterville\, County Kerry V23 A243\n\nFriday 17 April 2026\, 8pm \n\nSt John the Baptist Church\, School Road\, Valentia Island\, County Kerry V23 TY72\n\nSaturday 18 April 2026\, 7pm \nTo date over twenty Science-based Creative Art Workshops for Sustainability\, Biodiversity and Environmental Justice and live performances have taken place with schools\, communities\, and the general public to promote biodiversity\, sustainability\, social justice\, and green spaces in South Kerry. \nOpen Call: Schools\, youth\, community groups and the general public can attend live performances\, environmental talks\, science-based creative art workshops and a sustainable event management workshop. This fosters meaningful connections between parents and children\, creating a truly inclusive environment. \n\n\n\nLanguage Explorers workshops promote a human rights agenda by creating inclusive\, accessible artistic spaces that respect and celebrate every child’s right to participate in cultural life\, as outlined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (Article 12). The programme empowers children and families to express their linguistic and cultural identities\, fostering pride in their mother tongues and ensuring that minority and migrant voices are heard and valued. \n\n\n\nBy actively engaging parents and children from diverse backgrounds\, including those living in Direct Provision and socio-economically disadvantaged areas\, the workshops address the right to equality\, cultural participation\, and freedom of expression. Families come together in high-quality artistic activities while sharing and exploring the diversity of languages in the room – an experience equally inspiring for multilingual families as for those who are curious about other languages and cultures. Workshops are delivered in English\, but families are warmly encouraged to bring any and all languages they speak. SUMMARY:The Art of Trees by Mary Moynihan\, live performances at The Pearse Museum\, Rathfarnham and the Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality\, Sandycove

It beautifully intertwines performance art with environmental themes and Celtic traditions. The Art of Trees invites us to walk in nature\, to leave behind a world filled with straight lines\, computer screens\, concrete blocks\, and clock time\, to explore why tree cover in Ireland has fallen so low\, and to reflect on the role trees play in our ecosystem. Audiences are invited to join us as we walk through history and nature and rediscover the magic of woodlands. \n\n\n\nFollowing an international tour to Athens\, Greece; Frankfurt\, Germany and Saville\, Spain\, The Art of Trees by Mary Moynihan returns to Dublin due to popular demand  for nine performances only. Seven outdoors performances take place at The Pearse Museum and Saint Enda’s Park\, Grange Road\, Rathfarnham\, Dublin 16\, D16 Y7Y5 from 15 to 18 October 2025 – on Wednesday 15 October 10am and 12pm; Thursday 16 October 10am and 12pm; Friday 17 October 10am and 12pm; and Saturday 18 October 1pm. The Meeting Point is outside the entrance to Pearse Museum Reception. \n\n\n\nTwo indoor performances take place at the Smashing Times Arts and Human Rights Centre\, 30 Sandycove Road\, Dublin A96V9P1 on Saturday 18 October\, 7.30pm and Sunday 19 October\, 2pm. Tickets €15/10. \n\n\n\nNature is in trouble. Ireland has declared a climate and a biodiversity emergency. As President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins said if we were coal miners we would be up to our knees in dead canaries. Despite our green image we need to do more. Ireland has lost many of its native woods. It is estimated that only eleven per cent of Ireland is currently under forest cover\, much lower than most European countries. Finland for example has over 70 percent forest cover while Spain has over 35 percent. How can we celebrate the life of woodlands and connect more with nature\, to support the planet that gives us life and sustains us? What can we do to stop the felling and destruction of trees? \n\n\n\nIn the performance\, Brigid of Kildare\, patron saint of Ireland has returned from the past. She invites us to join her in the forest and enter the world of trees.  Brigid takes us on a journey through the history of trees from the Ice Age to present times\, exploring how forests have changed over thousands of years. Listen to stories about the ancient\, sacred trees of Ireland such as oak\, ash\, birch\, hazel and hawthorn and explore the wonders of a Celtic tradition of trees and forests where magic can happen. \n\n\n\nThe show is a theatrically staged fusion of theatre\, poetry\, story\, dance and music and is a dazzling storytelling performance suitable for all ages that is fun\, magical and sparking\, exploring what can be done to save our sacred trees and ancient woods. \n\n\n\nThe Art of Trees by Mary Moynihan is part of The Trees Project: Raising Environmental Awareness Through Performing Arts\, a project led by Dah Theatre\, Serbia and supported by Creative Europe. www.performtrees.eu \n  \n\n\n\nL to R: Carmen Ortiz Victorino\, Fiona Bawn-Thompson\, and Carla Ryan in The Art of Trees by Mary Moynihan\, in Athens\, Greece at the Fallen Trees Festival 2025\n\n\n\nThe Trees Project \n\n\n\nThe Trees project supported by Creative Europe is led by Dah Teatar\, Belgrade\, Serbia. Two outreach community workshops on trees and environmental sustainability were conducted by artist Carmen Ortiz Victorino with local community participants in Dublin\, Ireland. \n\n\n\nThe Art of Trees by Mary Moynihan was commissioned for The Trees project. The play creates an extraordinary atmosphere in nature’s setting as we reflect on the role of trees in our ecosystem\, the importance of nature in our lives today and themes of biodiversity\, climate preservation and climate change. Join us as we enjoy nature and explore how to be proactive in the face of climate change and making Europe climate friendly with a focus on biodiversity and the interconnectedness of the world around us. This project is open to all citizens\, communities and artists\, and to key stakeholders in the fields of theatre\, arts\, science\, environment\, education\, business and human rights.  \n\n\n\nIRISH AND EUROPEAN TOUR DATES: The Art of Trees by Mary Moynihan enjoyed a successful run at The Pearse Museum\, St. Enda’s Park\, in October 2024\, as part of the annual Arts and Human Rights festival prior to bringing its powerful message to audiences across Europe as part of an international tour in 2025 to Athens\, Greece (July); Frankfurt\, Germany (August) and Saville\, Spain (October).  \n\n\n\nSmashing Times were delighted to perform The Art of Trees by Mary Moynihan at the Fallen Trees festival in Veikou Park\, Athens\, Greece\, on 20 July 2025\, and at the Sommerwerft Festival at Weselerwerft\, Frankfurt\, Germany on 2 August 2025. Performers and artists on tour included Carmen Ortiz Victorino\, Fiona Bawn-Thompson\, Carla Ryan\, Martin Shannon\, Hina Khan and Ciara Hayes. The performances took place outdoors enabling unique connection between the audiences and the theme of the importance of nature and biodiversity. The audience reception at both performances was fantastic\, with full house at each performance. Audience members enjoyed taking part in our ‘living artwork’ which is a piece of interactive visual art created by visual artist Hina Khan.   A partial image of a tree has been drawn on a large piece of paper which lays on the ground beside the performance.  Audiences are invited to add to the art work at the end of each performance. In this way\, the image grows at every show\, with input from people across Europe and Ireland. The show will tour to Seville\, Spain on the 9 October 2025 as part of the TREES Creative Europe project. \n\n\n\nFollowing the international tour to Athens\, Greece; Frankfurt\, Germany and Saville\, Spain\, The Art of Trees by Mary Moynihan returns due to popular demand to The Pearse Museum and Saint Enda’s Park\, Grange Road\, Rathfarnham\, Dublin 16\, D16 Y7Y5 for seven performances only from 15 to 18 October 2025 and to the Smashing Times Arts and Human Rights Centre\, Sandycove\, for two performances only on Saturday 18 October\, 7.30pm and Sunday 19 October\, 2pm. SUMMARY:From Mexico to Ireland; a discussion on corporate responsibility & Human Rights
DESCRIPTION:Edition VII of Tintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary Journal\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe edition’s themes include belonging\, art\, place\, community\, the Irish language\, and nature. \n\n\n \n\n\n\nHer story will be the starting point for a broader conversation linking local struggles in Latin America (and other regions from the global south) with the responsibility of the Global North\, including Ireland and the European Union\, to ensure that companies based here respect human rights and the environment abroad. Grecia Rodríguez is a human rights defender who founded the Zacatecas Mining Conflict Observatory in 2016\, an organization that has become an ally in the struggle against mines and dams that threaten the lives of people in Zacatecas\, Mexico. \n\n\n\nBook Your Place\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nGrecia Eugenia Rodríguez Navarro\, Red Mexicana de Afectadas/os por la Minería \n\n\n\nSofia Larriera\, Business & Human Rights officer with Front Line Defenders \n\n\n\nAideen O’Dochartaigh – Dublin City University \nJorge Moran – Latin America Solidarity Centre \n\n\n\nFull Event Details\n\n\n\nFrom Zacatecas\, Mexico comes a voice that refuses to be silenced. In her words are rivers\, forests\, and the courage of communities standing against the weight of extraction and corporate power. In Dublin\, her story meets ours in a call for solidarity – a shared struggle to hold power to account and imagine a future where people and the planet are put over profit. \n\n\n\nAround the world\, communities are resisting destructive extractive projects that threaten their ancestral lands\, access to water\, livelihoods and the planet. In Mexico’s state of Zacatecas\, one of the country’s most heavily mined regions\, women human rights defenders (WHRDs) face intimidation\, environmental devastation\, and shrinking civic space as they challenge powerful corporate interests. \n\n\n\nIn this panel\, the WHRD Grecia Eugenia Rodríguez Navarro (Zacatecas Mining Conflict Observatory) will share her testimony of resistance and resilience from the front lines. Her story will be the starting point for a broader conversation linking local struggles in Latin America (and other regions from the global south) with the responsibility of the Global North\, including Ireland and the European Union\, to ensure that companies based here respect human rights and the environment abroad. \n\n\n\nWe will explore the urgent fight to defend the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) — a landmark law meant to hold companies accountable throughout their global operations — now under threat from deregulation efforts in Brussels. The discussion will address what’s at stake\, why public awareness matters\, and how people in Ireland can take action. This event invites the audience to connect with those in the front lines of the global struggle for justice and protecting the planes\, and to see their role in shaping fairer\, safer supply chains. \n  \n\n\n\nMembers of the Zacatecas Mining Conflict Observatory in Mexico\n\n\n\nSpeaker Biographies:\n\n\n\n\n\nWoman Human Rights Defender Grecia Eugenia Rodríguez Navarro from Mexico\n\n\n\n\n\nGrecia Rodríguez is a human rights defender who founded the Zacatecas Mining Conflict Observatory in 2016\, an organization that has become an ally in the struggle against mines and dams that threaten the lives of people in Zacatecas\, Mexico. The Observatory is an organization that\, as far as possible\, responds to the human rights crisis currently affecting Mexico\, becoming a benchmark in documenting and accompanying rural communities in the defense of their territory. Grecia is part of the Mexican Network of People Affected by Mining (REMA) and is a member of the National Network of Women Human Rights Defenders in Mexico. She has a solid background in social research and a recognized international track record in the defense of human rights in relation to socio-environmental conflicts. \n\n\n\nShe has collaborated with national and international organizations dedicated to the defense of the environment and human rights\, which has allowed her to effectively combine research with direct action in the field\, linking the production of knowledge with concrete actions that address strategic national issues such as the water crisis and the defense of territories. \n\n\n\nShe holds a PhD in Rural Development from the Autonomous Metropolitan University\, Xochimilco Unit (2024). She holds a Master’s degree in Social Sciences and Clinical Psychology from the Autonomous University of Zacatecas\, and has complemented her training with research stays at high-level institutions such as CIDES-UMSA in Bolivia\, ICTA at the Autonomous University of Barcelona\, and the University of the Balearic Islands in Mallorca. In addition\, she has shared her experience in key international forums\, such as the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR) in Berlin\, the University of Victoria in Canada\, and the Dublin Platform in Ireland\, consolidating her presence in academic and advocacy spaces with a global reach. She is an expert in sustainability accounting and responsible business. \n\n\n\nAideen’s research is interdisciplinary in nature and incorporates environmental social and governance (ESG) reporting practice and regulation\, carbon accounting and budgeting\, the circular economy and the bioeconomy. She has published in leading international academic and professional journals including MIT Sloan Management Review\, Journal of Product Innovation Management\, Accounting\, Auditing & Accountability Journal and Environmental Research Letters. Her work has transdisciplinary impact on industry\, society and policy; she has published high-impact research reports and regularly provides opinion pieces and invited comment on sustainability to national and international media. \n\n\n\nAideen previously qualified as a chartered accountant (FCA)\, training in practice with Deloitte Ireland\, and completed her PhD on sustainability accounting at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. She serves on a pro bono basis on the An Taisce Climate Committee and works on a voluntary basis with several climate and social justice community groups and NGOs in Ireland. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI am a proud Guatemalan mestizo gay man\, born after the civil war and “Peace Accords”\, (also known as the Mayan Genocide; 1960-1996)\, with a background in Journalism\, Media\, and Communication from the San Carlos University in Guatemala City. My life has been dedicated to fighting for justice\, equality\, and human rights. This commitment has come at a profound personal cost. My activism began early\, when I was expelled from the University of San Carlos (USAC) for opposing fraudulent dean elections and systemic corruption within the faculty. This was followed by being fired from a subsequent job for my efforts to organize workers and unionize\, clear retaliation for my stand on workers’ rights. Despite these targeted reprisals\, I continued my work a militant\, union leader\, and student leader\, tirelessly amplifying the voices of marginalized communities and pushing for systemic change. This trajectory of resistance ultimately led to death threats\, forcing me to relocate to Ireland in exile. \n\n\n\nThis challenging transition did not extinguish my passion but refueled it in a new context. In Dublin\, I have continued my commitment to community building and solidarity. As a Peer Support Leader with the Outhouse LGBTQI+ Centre\, I provide a vital lifeline\, through monthly meetings at “Safe Space”\, for fellow community members\, drawing on my own experiences to foster resilience and connection. My work extends to education as a cornerstone of empowerment\, teaching English Lessons with Trinity College Dublin’s program for Migrants\, Refugees\, and Asylum Seekers\, helping to break down barriers and build bridges for those starting new lives. \n\n\n\nFurther\, I have dedicated myself to increasing the visibility of the Hispanic and Latin American community in Ireland. As a member of the Executive Committee of the Latin America Solidarity Centre (LASC)\, I have helped organize conferences\, cultural festivals\, and political actions that spotlight our stories\, struggles\, and contributions\, fostering a deeper understanding and forging strong cross-cultural alliances. \n\n\n\nThe challenges I have faced\, from political expulsion and professional retaliation to forced exile\, have profoundly shaped my resilience\, determination\, and deep appreciation for education. These experiences motivate my pursuit of higher education\, not only to build a better future for myself but to contribute meaningfully to society. Despite the physical distance\, my identity and experiences continue to drive my work. I remain steadfastly committed to the Global South struggle\, building solidarity across borders and working toward a future rooted in justice\, dignity\, and respect for all. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganisations Involved / Partner Organisation(s):\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue Information:

SUMMARY:Smashing Times: Architecture and Activism. A guided tour and public talk at the Smashing Times Centre for the Arts and Human Rights at 30 Sandycove Road\, Dublin
DESCRIPTION:Edition VII of Tintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary Journal\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe edition’s themes include belonging\, art\, place\, community\, the Irish language\, and nature. \n\n\nSmashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality are transforming a space at 30 Sandycove Road into the Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality with a visual arts space and a Smashing Times Arts and Human Rights centre. The centre is open to citizens and communities and uses the arts to promote and advance equality\, human rights and diversity. The talk will include an overview of how we have transformed the building into a cultural hub and what energy efficient designs were used. \n\n\n\nBook Your Place\n\n\n\nFree admission\, book here \n\n\n\nArtists\n\n\n\nFreda Manweiler\, Company Manager and Producer\, Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality \n\n\n\nAlan Farrelly\, Architect \n\n\n\nFull Event Details\n\n\n\nCivic architecture refers to buildings and public spaces that serve the collective needs and values of a society. These structures are designed not just for function\, but to embody shared identity\, culture\, and democratic ideals.  Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality are transforming a space at 30 Sandycove Road into the Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality with a visual arts space and a Smashing Times Arts and Human Rights centre. The centre is open to citizens and communities and uses the arts to promote and advance equality\, human rights and diversity.   The new Smashing Times Centre which is devoted to the arts and human rights is a living example of civic architecture. It has a gallery and performance space and in the building we are creating a safe space for dialogue and expression\, offering a platform for diverse voices and promoting the space itself as a catalyst for change. \n\n\n\nIn terms of  ‘future heritage’ we are transforming an existing space into an arts and human rights centre\, giving new life to the building. It is important to explore how buildings evolve while maintaining cultural value and what does future heritage mean today. \n\n\n\nIn partnership with  Open House 2025 we offer a guided tour and talk in the Smashing Times space.  We are inviting people into the space\, to look at the artworks and to listen to a talk on “Architecture and Activism: What values do we embed into the spaces we leave behind?”.  The talk explores how we are making innovative use of an intimate space in an inclusive\, accessible way and explores what future heritage looks like when it embeds a human rights approach reflecting on justice for all. The talk will include an overview of how we have transformed the building into a cultural hub and what energy efficient designs were used. \n\n\n\nThe building is located in Sandycove which is rich with a literary and historical legacy from James Joyce and the Martello Tower to coastal heritage. By embedding a contemporary\, purpose-driven centre into that landscape\, we are contributing to a layered cultural narrative of the area creating a dialogue between past stories of culture and rights link to actions for human rights today within the physical fabric of Dublin. \n\n\n\nThe tour and talk is open to people of all ages. \n\n\n\nOpen House Dublin\n\n\n\nThis event is presented as part of Open House Dublin\, a free festival of architecture taking place across the city and county from 11-19 October 2025. The festival offers a diverse and exciting range of building tours\, talks\, lectures\, workshops\, and a dedicated weekend for children and young people\, Open House Junior. Open House is intended to welcome people into buildings and spaces\, making architecture accessible and encouraging conversation and curiosity about the city and the built environment. SUMMARY:Men in Motion – a trio of athletic and hilarious dance pieces presented by Irish Modern Dance Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Edition VII of Tintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary Journal\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe edition’s themes include belonging\, art\, place\, community\, the Irish language\, and nature. \n\n\nBook Your Place\n\n\n\nTickets €20\, book here \n\n\n\nArtists\n\n\n\nMerce Cunningham\, choreographer \n\n\n\nJohn Scott\, choreographer and dancer \n\n\n\nBoris Charrion\, dancer \n\n\n\nVini Martins Araujo\, dancer \n\n\n\nFull Event Details\n\n\n\nMEN IN MOTION is an evening of three athletic and hilarious dance pieces\, earning rave reviews and standing ovations in the Abbey\, Edinburgh Fringe and New York\, presented by Irish Modern Dance Theatre. The central work is iconic American Choreographer\, Merce Cunningham’s stunning ‘Solo’ followed by firm favourite ACTIONS – a sweeping\, vigorous duet by French dance sensation\, Boris Charrion and acclaimed Brazilian dancer Vini Martins Araujo. John Scott’s Beckett-like Bowing Dance\, completes a programme brimming with energy and adventure. \n\n\n\nSolo – Merce Cunningham \n\n\n\n“Its lunging jumps and scurrying steps appear shockingly wild … highlight the lasting beauty of Cunningham’s movement language. …. always articulated in a crystal-clear vocabulary” \n\n\n\nMichael Seaver\, The Irish Times \n\n\n\nThe Bowing Dance \n\n\n\n“the work can feel like a brilliant piece of absurdist theater\, a meditation on identity\, an entry-level primer on choreographic composition or nothing very much at all. Perhaps it’s all those things at once\, which is to say\, art” \n\n\n\nRoslyn Sulcas\, New York Times \n\n\n\nActions \n\n\n\n“within the choreography Scott has managed to blend quick-fire immediacy with slow-burning intellect. ….. there is a satisfying completeness to the dance” \n\n\n\nMichael Seaver\, The Irish Times \n\n\n\n“vibrant and witty” \n\n\n\nDonald Hutera\, The Times\, London \n\n\n\n“Daring physical feats? Check. Competitiveness? Check. Underlying\, shrugged-off affection? Check…… vigorous\, sweeping\, canted\, giant-step\, high-kick movements that Scott’s choreography favors ……. It’s wonderfully enjoyable\, skillfully paced\, and full of small surprises….. In its own way\, Actions tells us much about affability under pressure\, diligence\, and a feistiness that doesn’t negate the men’s respect for each other” \n\n\n\nDeborah Jowitt\, The Village Voice\, New York \n\n\n\nIrish Modern Dance Theatre \n\n\n\nFounded in 1991 by dancer and choreographer John Scott\, Irish Modern Dance Theatre is one of the most original and responsive dance companies working in Ireland today. A Dublin-based ensemble\, Scott and international guest choreographers create distinctive dance works with diverse casts\, mixing virtuosic Irish and international dancers with African and Middle Eastern refugees and torture survivors. Our works include ‘Lear’\, ‘Inventions’\, Actions’ and ‘Fall and Recover’ – all recognised for their intelligence\, honesty and humanity. Our work crosses disciplines\, subverts expectations of dance and dancers and finds new ways to explore contemporary issues. Irish Modern Dance Theatre is Strategically funded by the Arts Council. \n  \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biographies:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJohn Scott is a Dublin born choreographer\, performer\, founder and Artistic Director of Irish Modern Dance Theatre\, founder and Artistic Director of Dancer from the Dance Festival\, and a member of Aosdána. He studied and performed at Irish National College of Dance/Dublin City Ballet from 1982 to 1985 in works by Anton Dolin\, Anna Sokolow\, Pearl Gaden and Babil Gandara. \n\n\n\nHis choreographic works include Divine Madness\, Inventions\, Cloud Study\, Everything Now\, Lear\, Fall and Recover\, and Actions. His work has been presented at Dublin Dance Festival\, Galway International Arts Festival\, Kilkenny Arts Festival\, Dublin Fringe Festival and internationally at John F Kennedy Centre\, Washington DC\, New York Live Arts\, La MaMa\, Danspace Project at St Mark’s Church\, PS  122\, New York and Dance Base\, Edinburgh; Sounded Bodies Festival; Queer Zagreb\, Croatia; Les Hivernales\, Avignon; Tanzmesse Dusseldorf; and Forum Cultural Mundial\, Brazil. He danced in Oona Doherty’s Hard to be Soft\, Meredith Monk’s Quarry (Spoleto Festival) and for Yoshiko Chuma\, Sarah Rudner\, Anna Sokolow and Thomas Lehmen. He has collaborated with Pan Pan on Beckett’s QUAD. \n\n\n\nJohn was awarded African Refugee Network’s Culture Award for his work with Refugees and Survivors of Torture and is a subject of Sadlers Wells’ 52 Portraits by Jonathan Burrows\, Matteo Fargion and Hugo Glendinning. He has taught dance and choreography at the Irish World Academy\, University of Limerick; The Body in Performance\, Drama Department\, UCD; Drama Department NUIG; Drexel University\, Philadelphia; University of Colorado at Boulder\, USA and San Jose State University\, CA\, USA. He was a founding board member of Dublin Dance Festival and Dance Ireland. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMerce Cunningham (1919-2009) is widely considered to be one of the most important choreographers of all time. His approach to performance was ground breaking in its ideological simplicity and physical complexity: he applied the idea that “a thing is just that thing” to choreography\, embracing the notion that “if the dancer dances\, everything is there.” He also once said\, “Dance is most deeply concerned with each single instant as it comes along\, and its life and vigor and attraction lie in just that singleness. It is as accurate and impermanent as breathing.” \n\n\n\nBorn in Centralia\, Washington on April 16\, 1919\, Cunningham began dancing at a young age. At the Cornish School he first encountered the work of Martha Graham\, who would later invite him to join her company in New York; Cunningham had a six-year tenure as a soloist with the Martha Graham Dance Company. It was also at Cornish that Cunningham first met John Cage\, who would become the greatest influence on his practice\, his closest collaborator\, and his life partner until Cage’s death in 1992. The first show that included only Cunningham dances\, a series of six solos with music by Cage\, took place in 1944. Four years later\, Cunningham and Cage began a relationship with the famed experimental institution Black Mountain College\, where\, in 1952\, Cunningham\, along with Robert Rauschenberg\, David Tudor\, M.C. Richards\, and Charles Olson\, joined Cage in creating what is often considered the first “Happening.” Also at Black Mountain\, in 1953\, Cunningham first formed a dance company to explore his convention-breaking ideas. The Merce Cunningham Dance Company (originally called Merce Cunningham and Dance Company) would remain in continuous operation until 2011\, with Cunningham as Artistic Director until his death in 2009. In 1971\, Cunningham and his company became original tenants in Westbeth Artist Housing\, remaining in residence there\, along with his studio and school\, until the company’s dissolution. Over the course of his career\, Cunningham choreographed 190 dances and over 700 “Events.” \n\n\n\nCunningham once wrote\, “My work has always been in process. I do not think of each dance as an object\, rather a short stop on the way.” He has described four seminal events that led to large discoveries\, the first two of which came from his work with John Cage. Starting with their early collaborations in the 1940s\, Cage and Cunningham began to propose a number of radical innovations\, the first being the controversial idea that dance and music can occur in the same time and space but be created independently of one another. This separation gave Cunningham “a feeling of freedom for the dance\, not a dependence upon the note-by-note procedure.” A second leap for Cunningham and Cage was the use of chance operations\, a revolutionary form of decision-making in choreography (and\, in the case of Cage\, music) where Cunningham applied chance operations to determine elements of the choreography such as the continuity\, rhythm\, timing\, number of dancers\, and use of space. The use of chance operations led to new discoveries\, “presenting almost constantly situations in which the imagination is challenged.” \n\n\n\nCunningham’s lifelong passion for exploration and innovation made him a leader in applying new technologies to the arts. He credited his work in film in the 1970s as another key inflection point: tapping into the potentials provided by the mobility of the camera\, the ability to cut and thereby alter size and rhythm\, and the highlighting of specific body parts otherwise far less obvious given the distance of the viewer to the stage. In his 70s\, Cunningham continued to experiment\, using the computer software DanceForms to explore movement possibilities before setting them on dancers. He continued to find ways to integrate technology and dance: he explored motion-capture technology to create décor for Hand Drawn Spaces (1998)\, BIPED (1999)\, Loops (2000)\, and Fluid Canvas (2002). His interest in new media led to the creation of Mondays with Merce\, the webcast series that provides a behind-the-scenes look at Cunningham’s and his company’s teaching and rehearsal process. \n\n\n\nWith long-term collaborations with artists like Robert Rauschenberg (who contributed various design elements to over 20 of Cunningham’s dances—sometimes even creating his work onstage in “realtime” during the dance)\, Jasper Johns\, Charles Atlas\, and Elliot Caplan (rethinking the way choreography and dancing bodies could be captured on film)\, Cunningham’s sphere of influence extended deep into the visual arts world. In 2017\, the Walker Art Center retrospective Merce Cunningham: Common Time\, (also at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago)\, investigated the unique working methods\, profound relationships\, and influence of Cunningham\, featuring works from artists like Tacita Dean\, Morris Graves\, Robert Morris\, Bruce Nauman\, Isamu Noguchi\, Yoko Ono\, Nam June Paik\, Carolee Schneemann\, Frank Stella\, Stan VanDerBeek\, and Andy Warhol. \n\n\n\nAn active choreographer and mentor to the arts world until his death at the age of 90\, Cunningham earned some of the highest honors bestowed in the arts. Among his many awards are the National Medal of Arts (1990) and the MacArthur Fellowship (1985). He also received the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award in 2009\, Japan’s Praemium Imperiale in 2005\, the British Laurence Olivier Award in 1985\, and he was named Officier of the Legion d’Honneur in France in 2004. Cunningham’s life and artistic vision have been the subject of several books and numerous major exhibitions\, and his dances have been performed by groups including the Paris Opera Ballet\, New York City Ballet\, American Ballet Theatre\, White Oak Dance Project\, the Lyon Opera Ballet\, Ballett am Rhein\, and London’s Rambert\, to name a few. \n\n\n\nCunningham died in his New York City home on July 26\, 2009. Always forward-thinking\, he oversaw the development of a precedent-setting Legacy Plan prior to his death\, to guide his Company and ensure the preservation of his artistic legacy. Through the Merce Cunningham Trust\, his vision continues to live on\, regenerated time and time again through new bodies and minds. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nOrganisations Involved / Partner Organisation(s):\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue Information:

The partners are Action Synergy SA\, Greece; Theatro Aeroploio – Ena Theatro Giapaidia\, Greece; Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality\, Ireland; Grenland Friteater AS\, Norway; Centro de Arte Producciones Teatrales SL\, Spain; Protagon – Freunde Und Foerderer Freier Theateraktion\, Germany and Stichting Zid\, Netherlands. \n\n\n\nAs part of the Trees project\, Smashing Times and partners are using creative processes and the performing arts to connect with citizens through a multi-disciplinary approach\, raising awareness of the importance of nature in our world today with a focus on bio-diversity and our connections to trees\, seas\, skies\, mountains and land.  As part of the Trees project artists from Smashing Times attended a Euroeso Conference on the 22 April 2024 in Belgrade\, Serbia and a Trees conference and training programme in Belgrade Serbia  from 23-28 April\, 2024. SUMMARY:The Journey – live performance presented by Clondalkin Tower Drama Group
DESCRIPTION:Edition VII of Tintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary Journal\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe edition’s themes include belonging\, art\, place\, community\, the Irish language\, and nature. \n\n\n \n\n\n\nBeyond the stage\, The Journey serves as a powerful tool for raising public awareness about the lived realities of displaced people in Ireland. By dramatizing the emotional and systemic challenges faced by asylum seekers — from navigating the Direct Provision system (now IPAS) to enduring isolation\, unstable relationships\, and institutional neglect — the play bridges the gap between policy and personal experience. It puts a human face to headlines\, transforming statistics into stories that resonate deeply with audiences. \n\n\n\nBook Your Place\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtists\n\n\n\nOladipupo Salem\, actor \n\n\n\nMariam Fasipe\, actor \n\n\n\nAfolabi Fasipe\, actor \n\n\n\nAbosede Ogunsola\, actor \n\n\n\nVuvu Mateus Artur\, actor \n\n\n\nArinze Michael Ogbu\, actor \n\n\n\nEbenezer Omole\, actor \n\n\n\nDaniel Appoh\, actor \n\n\n\nJoy Sylvester\, actor \n\n\n\nUche Paul Chukwukem\, actor \n\n\n\nAbiodun Sanni\, actor \n\n\n\nMohammed Shadji\, actor \n\n\n\nUwague Sylvester\, stagehand \n\n\n\nSmart Osazua\, stagehand \n\n\n\nOsakpolor Aigbe\, stagehand \n  \n\n\n\nFull Event Details\n\n\n\nThe Journey is a powerful and emotionally charged play exploring themes of migration\, survival\, betrayal\, and resilience. It follows Michael and Joyce\, a couple whose lives are turned upside down after Michael is kidnapped during a risky business trip. After paying a ransom\, the couple is forced to flee their home country and seek asylum in Ireland. \n\n\n\nOnce in Ireland\, the challenges continue — from adjusting to life in IPAS accommodation to the unravelling of their relationship. Michael becomes entangled in a secret affair with Isabella\, leading to emotional abuse\, neglect\, and a deep sense of isolation for Joyce\, who is pregnant and vulnerable. \n\n\n\nThe play weaves in the stories of other migrants and asylum seekers\, like Isabella\, Smart\, Bob\, and Steve\, highlighting a range of personal and social struggles — from romantic betrayal to domestic abuse and systemic hardship. It culminates in a dramatic confrontation revealing Michael’s double life and the emotional toll of displacement on individuals and families. \n\n\n\nThrough intense dialogue\, raw emotion\, and layered storytelling\, The Journey sheds light on the lived experiences of migrants navigating uncertainty\, trauma\, and hope in their search for safety and belonging. \n\n\n\nBeyond the stage\, The Journey serves as a powerful tool for raising public awareness about the lived realities of displaced people in Ireland. \n\n\n\nThis storytelling fosters understanding and empathy among Irish communities\, many of whom may have limited direct contact with asylum seekers. By engaging viewers emotionally\, it challenges harmful stereotypes and misconceptions\, making visible the everyday struggles and resilience of displaced people. The play also opens up critical conversations around issues such as access to mental health support\, domestic abuse in asylum settings\, and the long-term impact of displacement on families. \n\n\n\nIn community talkbacks\, educational settings\, and public discourse\, The Journey becomes more than entertainment — it becomes activism. It invites policymakers\, service providers\, and the public to reflect on the urgent need for systemic reform and to support more compassionate\, rights-based approaches to asylum and integration in Ireland. \n\n\n\nThe purpose of the company (The Clondalkin Towers Drama group) is to promote\, produce\, and perform theatrical and dramatic works in Clondalkin and surrounding areas\, to encourage participation in and appreciation of the performing arts by the local community\, and to support the integration of International Protection applicants by fostering inclusion\, cultural exchange\, and engagement through drama and community theatre. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganisations Involved / Partner Organisation(s):\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue Information:
