We hope to provide inspiration for events and information on planning for Bealtaine Festival’s upcoming 30th anniversary. \n\n\n\nWe are absolutely thrilled to announce that our keynote speaker will be award-winning writer Colum McCann\, speaking on radical empathy and the potential for social change. \n\n\n\nWe will also have case studies from artists Keith Payne and Grace Dyas and a performance by poet Stephen James Smith\, as well as opportunities for networking\, panel discussions and more. \n\n\n\nMake sure to get your tickets first by contacting arts@ageandopportunity.ie to be added to our register of interest\, where you will be sent booking information directly as soon as tickets are released. \n  \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biographies:\n\n\n\n\n\nKeynote Speaker: \n\n\n\nColum McCann\, Writer \n\n\n\nSpeaking on Radical Empathy \n\n\n\nColum McCann is the author of seven novels\, three collections of stories and two works of non-fiction. Born and raised in Dublin\, Ireland\, he has been the recipient of many international honours\, including the U.S National Book Award\, the International Dublin Literary Prize\, a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres from the French government\, election to the Irish arts academy\, several European awards\, the 2010 Best Foreign Novel Award in China\, and an Oscar nomination. In 2017 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts.  His work has been published in over 40 languages.  He is the President and co-founder of the non-profit global story exchange organisation\, Narrative 4. He lives in New York with his wife Allison and their family.  His most recent novel\, Apeirogon\, became an immediate New York Times best-seller and won several major international awards.  His next novel\, Twist\, will be published in March 2025. \nKeith Payne\, Writer \nSpeaking on “Tales my Granny Told Me” \nJoined by a participant from the project. \nKeith Payne is a poet\, translator and editor. He is curator of the Aodh Ruadh Ó Domhnaill Poetry Exchange. Keith will be presenting on the project “Tales my Granny Told me” which collected stories from around the world brought to Ireland by International Protection Applicants. \nGrace Dyas\, Filmmaker \nSpeaking on “The No Show” \nGrace Dyas is an established artist and activist with nearly twenty years of experience making socially engaged art. She will be discussing her film project “The No Show”\, done in collaboration with Limerick City Build\, about the group of men’s experiences of abandonment\, absence\, loss and social exclusion. \nPerformance: \nStephen James Smith \nStephen James Smith\, born in Dublin\, is an Irish poet\, writer\, performer\, playwright\, and educator. Their short poetry films have captivated millions. Book here \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nTalha AlAli\, speaker\, Amnesty International IrelandFatin Al Tamimi\, speaker\, Vice-Chair\, Ireland-Palestine Solidarity CampaignStephen Bowen\, Executive Director of Amnesty International Ireland \n\n\n\nFull Event Details\n\n\n\nForagers depicts the dramas around the practice of foraging for wild edible plants in Palestine/Israel with wry humour and a meditative pace. Shot in the Golan Heights\, the Galilee and Jerusalem\, it employs fiction\, documentary and archival footage to portray the impact of Israeli nature protection laws on these customs. The restrictions prohibit the collection of the artichoke-like ’akkoub and za’atar (thyme)\, and have resulted in fines and trials for hundreds caught collecting these native plants. For Palestinians\, these laws constitute an ecological veil for legislation that further alienates them from their land while Israeli state representatives insist on their scientific expertise and duty to protect. Following the plants from the wild to the kitchen\, from the chases between the foragers and the nature patrol\, to courtroom defences\, Foragers captures the joy and knowledge embodied in these traditions alongside their resilience to the prohibitive law. By reframing the terms and constraints of preservation\, the film raises questions around the politics of extinction\, namely who determines what is made extinct and what gets to live on. \n\n\n\nThis film screening will be followed by a talk with Palestinian activists to explore the joy and knowledge embodied in foraging traditions\, alongside resilience to prohibitive laws than ban these customs by the Israeli State. \n\n\n\nThis event is hosted by the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign and Amnesty International Ireland. \n\n\n\nTalha Al Ali – speaker (Amnesty International Ireland) \n\n\n\nFatin Al Tamimi – speaker (Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign) \n\n\n\nStephen Bowen\, Executive Director of Amnesty International Ireland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Biographies:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFatin Al Tamimi is Vice-Chairperson and a Director of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign. A Palestinian woman\, she has been living and raising her family in Ireland for more than 30 years. Her family originally hails from Hebron and Gaza in Palestine\, and she still has close relatives living in both areas. She has been involved for many years in Palestine solidarity work in Ireland\, and in 2016 she was elected to the position of Chairperson of the IPSC in which she served for five years\, the first Palestinian to hold the position. She is also active in anti-racist\, anti-war and women’s groups in Ireland\, and has spoken at many events. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTalha is a Youth Activism Officer with Amnesty International Ireland. A Palestinian human rights activist\, performer\, lyricist\, and hip-hop artist. Talha started fighting for political change and social justice in Palestine at a young age through hip-hop music and theatre in the early 2000s. Talha’s passion for empowering people did not stop at music and theatre. He graduated from university as a psychologist and a counsellor and continued his post-grad in mental health and psychotherapy to work as a psychotherapist alongside his work in human rights. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBowen\, a barrister specialising in international human rights law and an academic with over 30 years’ experience\, has served as the Chief of Staff and Legal Adviser at the UN Special Coordinator for Sarajevo\, and as Chief Human Rights Officer to the UN Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNMIBH) during the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. He is also a former Director of the British Institute of Human Rights and most recently completed his role as Human Rights Course Director at Kingston University\, London. Bowen has also been a Visiting Professor of International Human Rights Law at Queen Mary\, University of London. \n\n\n\nHe not only brings his legal and academic expertise to the role\, but also a wealth of NGO experience having spent time with Amnesty International UK as Campaigns Director and as Director for External Affairs with Scope\, one of the UK’s leading disability equality charities. Bowen was Legal Adviser to the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights in the Gaza Strip and is a former trustee of Manchester Pride. Today he is a trustee of Sheffield DocFest and a trustee of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health\, a faculty of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. \n\n\n\n\n\nAmnesty International\n\n\n\nAmnesty International is a movement of 10 million people which mobilises the humanity in everyone and campaigns for change so we can all enjoy our human rights. We formed in 2001 as a democratic\, broad-based and multi-faceted campaign to support the human\, civil\, political and national rights of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Territories\, in Israel and in the Palestinian Diaspora.The IPSC is a volunteer-based coalition of individuals\, human rights and political activists\, academics\, journalists and trade unionists all committed to a just peace in the Middle East. We are independent of all Irish and Palestinian political parties and groups.The IPSC campaigns for freedom\, justice and equality for the Palestinian people and for an end to Israel’s racist and colonialist apartheid system. He studied and performed at Irish National College of Dance/Dublin City Ballet from 1982 to 1985 in works by Anton Dolin\, Anna Sokolow\, Pearl Gaden and Babil Gandara. \n\n\n\nHis choreographic works include Divine Madness\, Inventions\, Cloud Study\, Everything Now\, Lear\, Fall and Recover\, Actions in Ireland at Dublin Dance Festival\, Galway International Arts Festival\, Kilkenny Arts Festival\,  Dublin Fringe Festival and internationally at John F Kennedy Center\, Washington  DC\, New York Live Arts\, La MaMa\, Danspace Project at St Mark’s Church\, PS  122\, New York and Dance Base\, Edinburgh\, Sounded Bodies Festival and Queer  Zagreb\, Croatia\, Les Hivernales\, Avignon\, Tanzmesse Dusseldorf\, Forum Cultural  Mundial\, Brazil. \n\n\n\nHe danced in Oona Doherty’s Hard to be Soft\, Meredith Monk’s Quarry (Spoleto Festival) and for Yoshiko Chuma\, Sarah Rudner\, Anna Sokolow and Thomas Lehmen. He recently collaborated with Pan Pan on Beckett’s QUAD. \n\n\n\nJohn was awarded African Refugee Network’s Culture Award for his work with Refugees and Survivors of Torture and is a subject of Sadlers Wells’ 52 Portraits by Jonathan Burrows\, Matteo Fargion and Hugo Glendinning. He has taught dance and choreography at the Irish World Academy\, University of Limerick; The Body in Performance\, Drama Department\, UCD; Drama Department NUIG; Drexel University\, Philidelphia; University of Colorado at Boulder\, USA and San Jose State University\, CA\, USA. He was a founding board member of Dublin Dance Festival and Dance Ireland. \n\n\n\nJohn is an associate artist with Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality and has worked with the organisation for many years. Irish Modern Dance Theatre have been Creative Partners of the Dublin Arts and Human Rights Festival since its inception in 2019. \n\n\n\nIrish Modern Dance Theatre \n\n\n\nFounded in 1991 by dancer and choreographer John Scott\, Irish Modern Dance Theatre is one of the most original and responsive dance companies working in Ireland today. A Dublin-based ensemble\, Scott and international guest choreographers create distinctive dance works with diverse casts\, mixing virtuosic Irish and international dancers with African and Middle Eastern refugees and torture survivors. Our works include ‘Lear’\, ‘Inventions’\, Actions’ and ‘Fall and Recover’ – all recognised for their intelligence\, honesty and humanity. Our work crosses disciplines\, subverts expectations of dance and dancers and finds new ways to explore contemporary issues.
