“Where Should They Go?” is a discussion on Migrants and Refugees rights taking place onsite at The Ireland Institute, 27 Pearse Street, Dublin 2 on Sunday 20 October at 4pm.

Migrants and refugee communities, human rights defenders and organisations around the world have worked daily to mitigate the enormous challenges on securing migrants and refugee rights.

According to the UNHCR[1], by May 2024, more than 120 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide as a result of different reasons such as human rights violations, persecution, climate change, and conflicts.

Those people are one of the most vulnerable groups that need protection. Protecting forcibly displaced people is the responsibility of many actors, including the international community and the local governments. However, those actors are not completely fulfilling their duty to protect forcibly displaced people.

[1]

In face of this situation, human rights defenders intervene and support the compliance of these obligations, with the aim of respecting and guaranteeing the human rights of this group. These defenders work around the world addressing these issues, becoming the voice for those who are voiceless, by advocating and raising awareness on the human rights situation of the people on the move.

In this panel, we will hear the experiences of three women human rights defenders who work with forcibly displaced people around the globe, from Latvia, Lybia and Chile. These defenders will share their histories, demands and expectations on the future for the people on the move from their own circumstances but with a same aim: to ensure the exercise of their human rights.

Front Line Defenders maintains its headquarters in Dublin, an EU Office in Brussels, and regionally-based field staff in the Americas, Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
