Full Event Details

This new forum theatre play from Revolutionary Stage takes a look at the lived experiences of Brazilian migrants living in Dublin. Set during the backdrop of the Dublin riots, this devised play takes on discrimination in health, the workplace, and society at large, using forum theatre to change the narrative and build solidarity. This play is funded through the Artist in the Community Scheme Project Realisation Award from Create on behalf of the Arts Council.

Revolutionary Stage is a theatre collective using Theatre of the Oppressed to interrogate immigrant rights, the rise of the far right, and systemic oppression. Harnessing the collective power of Forum Theatre, their interactive play takes an incisive look at the ways anti-immigrant sentiments have grown in Ireland in both personal and public spheres.  It is presenting this play through the Artist in the Community Project Realisation Award funded by Create on behalf of the Arts Council.

Augusto Boal, Brazilian theatre practitioner, activist and politician

Augusto Boal (1931–2009) was a Brazilian theatre practitioner, activist, and politician who created the Theatre of the Oppressed, a system of interactive, participatory theatre designed to transform society and empower marginalized communities by changing passive spectators into active “spect-actors” who devise solutions to their own social problems. Influenced by Paulo Freire’s “Pedagogy of the Oppressed,” Boal’s work at the Arena Theatre  in São Paulo led to his arrest and exile by the Brazilian military dictatorship in the 1970s, after which he developed Forum Theatre, Invisible Theatre, Image Theatre and Legislative Theatre,  among other techniques, which spread globally to foster social change.
