Enjoy fun, in-depth interview with Naoise Ó Brádaigh presenting Letters from Afar with Naoise: Irish Diaspora Diaries
The Smashing Times Arts and Human Rights Radio Show, broadcast Wednesday 29 April and Wednesday 3 May, 6-7pm, is presented by Mary Moynihan on Dublin South FM.
On Wednesday 29 April, we are launching on the show a new occasional segment called Letters from Afar with Naoise: Irish Diaspora Diaries. Over the coming months, Naoise will be joining us from Australia, sharing stories from the Irish abroad, exploring migration, identity, and the realities of building a life far from home.
Letters from Afar follows the adventures of a young Irish man, Naoise Ó Brádaigh who has decided to emigrate to Australia. Naoise left Ireland in March of this year (2026) and is currently travelling to Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam before heading ‘down under’ to Australia where he plans to stay for two years. Through Naoise’s experiences, we shall hear about the excitement, adventure, and reality of moving to the other side of the world. In addition to talking about the experiences of a young Irish person emigrating, we will use the opportunity to talk about artists, culture and sport in some of the locations Naoise is travelling to.
On today’s show, Naoise chats about his adventures in Nepal and Thailand. Presenter Mary Moynihan shares information on artists from Nepal including Rachana Dahal, a singer, songwriter, and composer and Balendra Shah, known as Balen, a rapper-turned-politician, who became Nepal’s youngest prime minister in March of this year at the age of 35. Elections took place on 5 March 2026 in Nepal and Balen’s party won a clear majority.
Smashing Times News
On Wednesday, 22 April 2026, Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality published the sixth edition of Tintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary Journal. In this edition, we include poetry by Richard W. Halperin (the Featured Artist) and a Featured Artist Interview with Richard, visual art by Martina Furlong and Julianna Sabitova, short fiction by Neil Flynn, and an article by Mary Moynihan titled The Joy and Sorrow of Being Alive: A Reflection on John Koenig’s Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. In the article, Mary shares some lovely word definitions from this beautiful dictionary that poetically defines emotions we all feel, strange feelings we may experience but don’t have words to express – until now. With regard to Tintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary journal, the editor Féilim James says ‘although this edition is un-themed, the published artworks share certain preoccupations. Prime among them are the overlapping themes of memory, grief, and time’. It’s a fantastic edition with beautiful artworks from great artists, well worth reading. https://smashingtimes.ie/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Edition-VI-of-Tintreach-April-2026-1.pdf

From the Forest to the Ocean is now open at the Smashing Times Gallery, 30 Sandycove Road, Dublin, A96V9P1, running until Sunday 7 June 2026, Wednesday to Friday 1-6pm, Sat + Sun 10am-6pm. All welcome. From the Forest to the Ocean is a solo exhibition by artist Mary Moynihan bringing together photography, poetry, and film. The exhibition draws inspiration from the physical landscapes of nature and the deep interconnectedness of life — from forests to the ocean. The artworks map physical landscapes and seascapes to landscapes of the soul and are rooted in reflections on nature, journeys of interconnectedness, and the art of letting go, exploring the boundaries between the natural world and the human spirit. The work creates a synergy between the evocative beauty and fragility of the photographic landscapes and seascapes of counties Dublin, Wicklow, and Kerry, all in Ireland, and landscapes from France, combined with the emotional impact of poetical texts in written and in a poem-film format.
