Tintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary Journal
Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality publishes Tintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary Journal, which appears quarterly online and features works from across all artforms.
Tintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary Journal is a major development for the company and a continuation and expansion of the monthly Tintreach section in the Smashing Times Newsletter. Previous contributors to this section include poets Jessica Traynor, Mary O’Malley, and Annemarie Ní Churreáin, Senator Lynn Ruane, 2023 Nobel Peace Prize-winner Narges Mohammadi, rapper-singer Saint Levant, and many more. Each edition of Tintreach includes three or four artworks by a Featured Artist, work by three other artists (usually with multiple artworks by each), and an article from The Art of Life Series (or other series) by Mary Moynihan, Smashing Times Artistic Director and writer of novels, poetry, plays, and films, and a creator of art and photography. From April 2025 onwards, the journal will also contain a Featured Artist interview.
‘Tintreach’ is the Irish word for lightning, which symbolises the spark that animates art, making it striking and engaging. What sets Tintreach apart as a publication? Firstly, there is its openness to all artforms. Be it an interpretative dance video or a collage of embroidered haiku, if your work is conceivably an artwork, and fits the medium of an online journal, then we will consider it for publication.
Secondly, each artist selected for publication always has multiple pieces included. The purpose of this is to offer artists, especially emerging artists, more exposure than a journal publication may normally offer. The flexibility of our online formatting also enables us to publish videos, which opens the door for short film, dance, songs, theatre excerpts, and so on.
The artworks are selected from a combination of an open submissions call and solicited submissions. Artistic merit is the primary requirement for publication which includes, for example, originality, depth and complexity and a strong technical foundation. It is also important to have the work on theme, if it is a themed edition.
We are committed to diversity and representation; as such, we aim to include the work of artists from under-represented backgrounds including those based on age, civil or family status, disability, gender, membership of the Traveller Community, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status. This aligns with the company’s policy and The Arts Council’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policy recognising the challenges faced by such artists who are striving to advance their careers and enhance their artistic practice. Finally, as a Smashing Times publication, the fundamental principles of human rights, social justice, and equality will often be reflected in the journal’s content.
The first edition of Tintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary journal appears on Thursday, 30 January, 2025 under the theme of Arts and Human Rights. The Featured Artist is visual artist Chrissie Dervin; the other artists are poet Jessica Traynor, poet Bronagh Mallon, writer and poet Mary Moynihan, and poet Annemarie Ní Churreáin,
The April 2025 edition comes out on Thursday, 17 April, and is unthemed. The submissions deadline for this edition will be Friday, 7 March. The July and October 2025 editions share themes and contributors with the 2025 Irish Arts and Human Rights Festival, run by Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality and Front Line Defenders with a range of partners. Submissions calls are always posted on the News page of our website, with further promotion on social media and in our newsletters.
