Submission Call for Edition VII of Tintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary Journal

**Submissions Are Now Closed**

Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality would like to invite submissions to Edition VII of Tintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary Journal, which will be published on Saturday, 18 July 2026. Submissions are open until midnight on Sunday, 14 June 2026. This is a special bilingual edition themed ‘Muintearas: Macallaí Uíbh Ráthaigh / Belonging: Echoes of Iveragh’, which will exclusively publish six artists from Uíbh Ráthach, County Kerry. The edition will celebrate artistic practice, the Irish language, and community engagement. The theme can be interpreted broadly, but should include some exploration of art, place, community, the Irish language, nature (land and seascapes), or belonging. Successful artists will receive a fee. (Details and full guidelines below.)

Submissions are welcome across all artforms, including artists working with communities and in environmental eco-art practice, with three of the six places reserved for Irish-language artists (Tintreach Editor Féilim James is proficient in Irish). A Tintreach Creative Writing Workshop will take place on Saturday, 6 June 2026, 2–4pm, at The Old Barracks Heritage Centre, Cahersiveen, County Kerry. The workshop will explore writing skills, spark creativity, and build creative connections, listening to what artists want, as well as offering information on the present submission call to Tintreach. (You are not obliged to attend this if you want to submit.)

Selected artists collaborate with the editor through an editorial process and are required to be available to take part in the Public Launch, Creative Readings, and Artist Talks on Saturday 18 July 2026, 7pm on site in The Old Barracks Heritage Centre, Cahersiveen, Kerry, and to be interviewed on the Smashing Times Arts and Human Rights Radio Show to chat about your work as an artist (on Tuesday 21 July, by zoom or in studio). Smashing Times are open to supporting all artists; if you wish to submit to Tintreach but do not wish to speak in public, please let us know.

This call is open to artists and creatives from or working in Uíbh Ráthach/The Iveragh Peninsula.

We are open to submissions from Irish-language and English-language speakers and artists, to artists working in environmental and collaborative community contexts, and to artists exploring a sense of place, local history and folklore, community, landscape, belonging, storytelling, and memory.

Supported by Cumas Ceantar Creative Places Uíbh Ráthaigh, Ciste Beag Ealaíon (Micro Arts Fund) 2026, Kerry County Council, and Failte Ireland.

Full Guidelines for Submissions to Edition VII of Tintreach: The Smashing Times Arts and Literary Journal

Short-Form Pieces

  • Poems can be any length.
  • Articles should be no longer than 1,500 words.
  • A written excerpt from a play or screenplay should not exceed 1,500 words.
  • Flash fiction pieces should be 700 words or less.
  • If sending a photograph, or an image of a painting, sculpture, or architectural work, please ensure that the images are of a high quality, and provide the work’s label: material(s) used, dimensions, and year. Please include a few lines contextualising your piece. Lastly, please remember to include thetitle of the piece in each file name.

Long-Form Pieces

  • Prose submissions – a short story, non-fiction essay, or novel extract, but not flash fiction, which qualifies as short-form – should be no longer than 3,000 words.

Submissions Per Person

  • When it comes to short-form pieces (everything except for short stories, non-fiction essays, or novel extracts), we strive to publish two works by each artist, while the Featured Artist will have 3–4 pieces included. The purpose of this is to offer artists, especially emerging artists, more exposure than a journal publication would normally offer. Therefore, unless you are submitting a long-form piece, we ask that you submit a minimum of two works and a maximum of four. These can be in any combination of artforms you wish. (For example, two poems, a play excerpt, and a painting.)
  • You may only submit one long-form piece(short story, non-fiction essay, or novel extract). However, you may submit two short-form pieces alongside this, if you wish. This makes a maximum of three total submissions if you are submitting one long-form piece. (For example, one short story and two paintings, or one novel extract and two sculptures.)

General Guidelines for This Call

  • We are seeking submissions exclusively from artists from Uíbh Ráthach/The Iveragh Peninsula, County Kerry. (Artists who have previously lived there, who have recently moved there, or have a connection with the area will be considered). Please provide a note with your submission outlining your connection to the area.
  • Unfortunately, we cannot publish video or audio submissions.
  • Submissions may have appeared elsewhere before, though new work is especially welcome. (If a submission has appeared elsewhere, please state this and include the publication details. Please also ensure that any copyright period agreed with the previous journal/publisher has elapsed.)
  • International submissions are welcome where the artist can demonstrate a previous link to Iveragh.
  • AI-generated submissions are not acceptable under any circumstances.
  • Submissions can be made in English, Irish, or in translation. In the case of English-Irish and Irish-English translations, we would be keen to publish both versions together (this is not compulsory). For translations of the work of another author, all relevant permissions must be obtained beforehand. We may also look to publish the original alongside the translation.
  • There is no entry fee.
  • Submissions are open until midnight on Sunday, 14 June 2026.
  • Please submit to smashingsubmissions(at)gmail.com. Subject lines should read: Tintreach Submission, Edition VII. Please include a three-sentence biography to accompany your piece, written in third person (Irish or English) and making reference to your previous publications/exhibitions/appearances (if applicable); a headshot or photograph; whether you would like to be signed up to receive our monthly newsletter; how exactly you heard of this submission opportunity; and any social media/website links you would like to be included in case of publication. Finally, please include your phone number, as we sometimes like to interview successful artists on our radio show (though the interview is, of course, completely optional). In order to ensure your submission’s eligibility, please make sure that you have included everything we have requested.
  • Our preference for written pieces is that they be sent in a Word document. Please do not send them in a PDF.
  • If we accept a written piece, the editor will contact you with at least one round of suggested edits, so please monitor your email closely.
  • In addition to the open call, we will invite artists directly to submit work for consideration (solicited submissions).
  • Contributors to Tintreach will receive a fee. For this edition only, each selected artist receives a fee of €125 and must be available for the following:
    • Contribute artworks to the journal
    • Attend public launch in person (on site at The Old Barracks Heritage Centre, Cahersiveen) and conduct an artist talk and/or creative reading of your work on Saturday 18 July 2026, 7pm. Smashing Times cannot pay for travel or expenses for artists to attend launches/events.
    • Be available for interview on the Smashing Times Arts and Human Rights radio show on the early afternoon of Tuesday 21 July 2026 (by zoom or in studio) – all subject to final confirmation by Smashing Times.
  • The edition will be published on Saturday 18 July 2026.
  • Previous contributors to Tintreach (and its precursor, the Tintreach section of our newsletter) include poets Jessica Traynor and Fady Joudah, Senator Lynn Ruane, 2023 Nobel Peace Prize-winner Narges Mohammadi, playwright and theatre director Dijana Milošević, rapper-singer Saint Levant, and many more.
  • This edition of Tintreach will be sold digitally, which will support Tintreach in continuing as a publication.
  • Smashing Times claims first (or not first, if piece was previously published) serial rights. If selected, your work will be published on our website as part of our online archive. Copyright remains in all cases with the author.
  • Submissions are especially welcome from individuals who have been underrepresented historically, such as ethnic minorities, persons with disabilities, members of the Traveller community, the LGBTQ+ community, women, and all minorities.
