Full Event Details

Each month, the Humanist Association of Ireland hosts online events in which speakers from all walks of life with an interesting perspective talk about core humanist principles of kindness and compassion, reason, equality and human rights. Ed Byrne, acclaimed Irish comedian, presenter and actor is the guest speaker for this remarkable talk which explore Humanism in the Arts from the artist’s unique perspective.

But Ed is also a humanist and has been a patron of Humanists UK for many years. Across dozens of interviews, TV shows and even stand-up routines, Ed has discussed his atheism and subsequent humanism at length – exploring topics such as morality, kindness and human rights.

As Humanism holds human rights, morality, ethics and compassion as core principles, every event that we endorse must champion the promotion of these principles through either action or education.

In this case, as Ed Byrne has both lived experience as a humanist and in the arts and culture industry, it is entirely appropriate to connect this talk with the promotion of a human rights agenda through education and connecting the talk with a wider audience who may not have encountered the humanist lifestance before.

As part of the Irish Arts Human Rights Festival 2025 hosted by Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality, this remarkable talk will explore Humanism in the Arts from Ed’s unique perspective.

Humanist Association of Ireland

The Humanist Association of Ireland (HAI) grew from and replaced the Association of Irish Humanists (AIH), which was founded in 1993 and renamed the Humanist Association of Ireland in 2004.  The HAI signed up to the Amsterdam Declaration 2002 and subsequently the Amsterdam Declaration 2022, a statement outlining the fundamental principles of modern humanism.  We now have many local groups across the country and hold a variety of events throughout the year promoting humanism and addressing the challenges facing humanists.  The organisation’s membership continues to grow year on year as does the demand for its range of non-religious ceremonies.
