Memorial Monologues is a live outdoor event at the Memorial Monument in the Iveagh Gardens, featuring stories based on the lives and work of some of the Human Rights Defenders featured at the monument, performed by Smashing Times.
What is a Human Rights Defender?
“Human rights defender” is a term used to describe people who, individually or with others, act to promote or protect human rights in a peaceful manner.
About the Memorial Monument:
On Wednesday, 09 December 2020, International Human Rights Defenders Day, Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney and UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders Mary Lawlor inaugurated the Human Rights Defender Memorial monument, dedicated to those who have been killed because of their peaceful work defending the rights of others.
The Memorial provides a physical space in the heart of Dublin city to recognise the important work of human rights defenders around the world, and pay tribute to the many brave and inspirational human rights defenders who have been silenced.
