This episode of the Smashing Times Arts and Human Rights radio show has a special focus on women involved in the Irish Easter Rising of 1916. The presenter Mary Moynihan is a writer, poet and creator of art and photography. Mary has a strong interest in historical memory, collecting the stories of men and women from history with a focus on stories of people who in some way stood up for the rights of others. Mary collects the stories and uses them as inspiration to create plays, films and visual art exhibitions which are then share with a wider audience. In this episode of the radio show, Mary shares the life stories of four women, Countess de Markievicz, Eva Gore-Booth, Margaret Skinnider and Dr Kathleen Lynn, who were active in the revolutionary period in Irish history.
Constance de Markievicz (1868-1927) was an Irish politician, revolutionary nationalist, suffragette and socialist and one of the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising. Eva Gore-Booth (1870-1926) was a poet, writer, trade unionist, feminist, a campaigner for equality and social justice, and a sister of Irish revolutionary leader Countess Markievicz. Dr Kathleen Lynn (1874-1955) was a medical doctor, politician, feminist, suffragist, Republican and socialist who took part in the Easter Rising. She was chief medical officer with James Connolly’s Irish Citizen Army and took over command of the City Hall garrison. Margaret Skinnider (1893-1971) was a revolutionary feminist and trade unionist who fought in the 1916 Easter Rising at St Stephen’s Green and later at the College of Surgeons.
The show features clips from the short film Courageous Women by Mary Moynihan, with Roisin McAtamney as Margaret Skinnider and Megan O’Mally as Countess de Markievicz. The film is an imagined recreation of moments from the lives of women active in the revolutionary period in Irish history.
