Courageous Women Castle to Castle

A Smashing Times Collection of Women’s Stories

In partnership with Rathfarnham Castle, Dublin Castle and The Office of Public Works

Smashing Times have gathered together a Collection of Women’s Stories from different periods in history and today. These stories have inspired the creation of plays, films, digital art exhibitions, e-books, theatre workshop models, blogs and newsletters – and these are available to the public as a cultural heritage resource our website.

To celebrate National Heritage week 15-23 August 2020 and the range of resources curated by Smashing Times inspired by the women’s stories, we have created two short films in partnership with Dublin Castle and Rathfarnham Castle on the theme of Courageous Women Castle to Castle featuring chats, storytelling and performances with artists and guest speakers, highlighting the incredible stories of women in history and their impact on our lives today. We have chosen the unique settings of Rathfarnham Castle and Dublin Castle to remember and reflect on stories of courageous women from the past and today.

The two short films feature scenes from Constance and Her Friends inspired by women’s stories in Irish history from 1916 to 1923, performed at Dublin Castle, and The Woman is Present: Women’s Stories of WWII inspired by women’s stories from WWII, performed at Rathfarnham Castle. We will also feature scenes from two films – Courageous Women inspired by women’s stories from 1916 to 1923 and Tell Them Our Names inspired by women’s stories from WWII, both directed by Mary Moynihan. For further information on the stories see our e-books Women War and Peace, The Comet Lines – Freedom Trails of Europe and Women in an Equal Europe.

Audiences can view the films during Heritage Week on the Smashing Times Collection of Women’s Stories webpage where the full list of cultural resources are displayed, and also on the Smashing Times Facebook page. Links will also be posted on Rathfarnham Castle and Dublin Castle social media.
